Method and apparatus for producing a high level of disinfection in air and surfaces
View Patent ↗This specification relates to an improved method, process and apparatus for disinfecting and sterilizing all types of surfaces and indoor air and room air contaminated with microorganisms. The improved apparatus consists of a multi-wavelength narrow spectral width UV source that is more effective than mercury based 254 nm germicidal lamps for destroying the DNA and outer shell or membrane of virus, bacteria, spores and cists.
1. A process for destroying or deactivating the DNA organic bonds and proteins of microorganisms comprising the steps of:
generating photons of at least two single line wavelengths from a non-coherent light source selected from the group consisting of at least two wavelengths being of 222 nm, 254 nm, and 282 nm;
directing the photons to a substance to be disinfected, whereby the photons destroy or deactivate the DNA organic bonds and proteins of microorganisms;
exposing the surface to be disinfected to the generated photons of at least two wavelengths, wherein the exposing achieves a ninety percent kill of microorganisms in a time period of less than one second.
2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the protons are directed by reflecting the photons to a desired surface.
3. The process of claim 2 , where the reflecting is performed by a gull-wing reflector.
4. The process of claim 2 , wherein the reflector is coated with barium sulfate.
5. The process of claim 1 further comprising the steps of:
directing an air stream to the generated photons of at least two wavelengths selected from the group consisting of 222 nm, 254 nm, and 282 nm; and
exposing the air stream to the generated photons.
6. The process of claim 5 , further comprising the steps of:
determining required activity time to disinfect the air stream; and
directing the photons to achieve disinfection of the air stream in a single pass.
