Abstract

An aluminum alloy propeller shaft including a tube made of an aluminum alloy, and a pair of yoke members made of an aluminum alloy, the yoke members including cylindrical base portions friction-welded to opposite end portions of the tube, each of the yoke members including a tip end portion having a pair of bearing retaining holes aligned with each other in a radial direction of the base portion. Variation in length between a central axis of the bearing retaining holes in one of the yoke members and a central axis of the bearing retaining holes in the other yoke member with respect to a reference length is set within a range of from +2.0 mm to −2.0 mm. A friction welding process of producing an aluminum alloy propeller shaft, including a friction step, a position displacement detection step, a rotation stop step and an upset step.

Claims (11)

1. An aluminum alloy propeller shaft comprising:

a tube made of an aluminum alloy;

a pair of yoke members made of an aluminum alloy, the pair of yoke members comprising cylindrical base portions butted against opposite end portions of the tube in an axial direction of the tube, and

bonding portions, including friction welds by which said cylindrical base portions are friction-welded at bonding interfaces to the opposite end portions of the tube,

wherein each of the pair of yoke members comprises a bifurcate-shaped tip end portion having a pair of bearing retaining holes aligned with each other in a radial direction of the base portion,

wherein each of the bonding portions has a heat softened range limited so as to remain within a selected distance from a respective one of the bonding interfaces and a hardness limited so as to remain within a selected hardness range from hardness of the tube or the yoke members, and

wherein variation in length between a central axis of the bearing retaining holes formed in one of the pair of yoke members and a central axis of the bearing retaining holes formed in the other of the pair of yoke members with respect to a reference length is set within a range of from +2.0 mm to −2.0 mm.

2. The aluminum alloy propeller shaft as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a difference in angular phase between the central axis of the bearing retaining holes of one of the pair of yoke members and the central axis of the bearing retaining holes of the other of the pair of yoke members in a circumferential direction thereof is within a range of from +3 degrees to −3 degrees.

3. The aluminum alloy propeller shaft as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the tube is made of 6000 series aluminum alloy, and has a thickness of 3 mm.

4. The aluminum alloy propeller shaft as claimed in claim 3 , wherein each of the heat softened ranges extends from one of the bonding interfaces, which is located between the tube and one of the pair of yoke members, over a length that is limited to within 5 mm from said one of the bonding interfaces.

5. The aluminum alloy propeller shaft as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the hardness of the heat softened range is limited to remain within 40 HV of the tube or the yoke members.
