Abstract

Methods are disclosed for processing biomass by single-stage supercritical hydrolysis, wherein the biomass has been size reduced.

Claims (62)

1. A method, comprising:

size reducing a starting lignocellulosic biomass to form a lignocellulosic biomass having a particle size less than about 500 μm;

forming a mixture comprising:

water; and

said lignocellulosic biomass having a particle size less than about 500 μm; and

contacting water at a temperature of at least about 374° C. and a pressure of at least about 221 bar with said mixture for a duration sufficient to produce at least one C 5 or C 6 saccharide;

wherein said mixture is substantially free of exogenous acid.

2. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said size reducing comprises steam exploding said starting lignocellulosic biomass optionally in the presence of a chemical selected from the group consisting of ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and combinations thereof.

3. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said size reducing comprises comminuting said starting lignocellulosic biomass.

4. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said mixture is substantially free of C 1 -C 5 alcohol.

5. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said starting lignocellulosic biomass is in the form of logs.

6. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said starting lignocellulosic biomass is substantially free of acid functionality.

7. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said starting lignocellulosic biomass is substantially stable to autohydrolysis.

8. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said lignocellulosic biomass is derived from hardwood, softwood, agricultural residue, grass, algae, paper, waste lignocellulosic biomass, thermally processed cellulosic biomass, chemically processed cellulosic biomass, or combinations thereof.

9. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said lignocellulosic biomass has a particle size less than about 250 μm.

10. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said lignocellulosic biomass has a panicle size less than about 125 μm.

11. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said lignocellulosic biomass has a particle size less than about 25 μm.

12. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said C 5 or C 6 saccharide is at least one sugar selected from the group consisting of C 5 monosaccharide, C 5 oligosaccharide having a degree of polymerization less than about 15, C 6 monosaccharide, C 6 oligosaccharide having a degree of polymerization less than about 15, and combinations thereof.

13. The method of claim 12 ,

wherein said C 5 or C 6 saccharide is said C 5 monosaccharide, and said C 5 monosaccharide is at least one sugar selected from the group consisting of xylose, arabinose, lyxose, ribose, xylulose, and combinations thereof.

14. The method of claim 12 ,

wherein said C 5 or C 6 saccharide is said C 6 monosaccharide, and said C 6 monosaccharide is at least one sugar selected from the group consisting of glucose, mannose, galactose, fructose, and combinations thereof.

15. The method of claim 12 ,

wherein said C 5 or C 6 saccharide is said C 5 oligosaccharide, and said C 5 oligosaccharide has a degree of polymerization of about 2 to about 12.

16. The method of claim 12 ,

wherein said C 5 or C 6 saccharide is said C 6 oligosaccharide, and said C 6 oligosaccharide has a degree of polymerization of about 2 to about 14.

17. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said C 5 or C 6 saccharide is a combination of glucose and xylose.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

heating said mixture to a temperature of at least about 200° C. subsequent to said size reducing step and prior to said contacting step.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

fermenting at least one of said C 5 and C 6 saccharide.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising;

recovering at least one component released into a gas phase.

21. The method of claim 20 ,

wherein said component is furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural, acetic acid, methanol, or a combination thereof.

22. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein said duration is about 0.1 seconds to about 10 seconds.

23. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

purifying at least one of said C 5 and C 6 saccharide.

24. The method of claim 23 ,

wherein said purifying comprises simulated moving bed chromatography.

25. A composition produced by the method of claim 1 .

26. A composition, comprising:

about 0.1% by weight to about 4% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of C 5 monosaccharide;

about 0.1% by weight to about 4% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of C 5 oligosaccharide having a degree of polymerization less than about 15;

about 0.1% by weight to about 8% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of C 6 monosaccharide; and

about 0.1% by weight to about 8% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of C 6 oligosaccharide having a degree of polymerization less than about 15.

27. A composition, comprising:

about 0.1% by weight to about 4% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of C 5 monosaccharide; and

about 0.1% by weight to about 8% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of C 6 monosaccharide.
