Abstract

Methods and means are provided for the modification of the reactivity of plant cell walls, particularly as they can be found in natural fibers of fiber producing plants by inclusion of positively charged oligosaccharides or polysaccharides into the cell wall. This can be conveniently achieved by expressing a chimeric gene encoding an N-acetylglucosamine transferase, particularly an N-acetylglucosamine transferase, capable of being targeted to the membranes of the Golgi apparatus in cells of a plant.

Claims (10)

1. A cotton fiber comprising a plant cell wall comprising positively charged oligosaccharides embedded in the cellulose of said cell wall, wherein said oligosaccharide comprises chito-oligosaccharides in a concentration of at least 0.1 μg/mg cell wall material.

2. A yarn or a fabric comprising the cotton fiber of claim 1 .

3. The cotton fiber of claim 1 , wherein said positively charged oligosaccharides are oligo-N acetylglucosamines or oligo-glucosamines.

4. The cotton fiber of claim 3 , wherein said oligo-N acetylglucosamines or oligo-glucosamines have a polymerization degree between 3 and 10.

5. The cotton fiber of claim 4 , wherein said polymerization degree is between 3 and 5.

6. The cotton fiber of claim 3 , wherein the content of said N-acetylglucosamine oligomers or chitin or glucosamine is increased by at least 5% in staining by congo-red as compared to control cell wall material from a non transgenic cotton fiber cell.

7. The cotton fiber of claim 1 , wherein said oligosaccharide comprises chito-oligosaccharides in a concentration of at least 1 μg/mg cell wall material.

8. The cotton fiber of claim 1 , wherein said oligosaccharide comprises chito-oligosaccharides in a concentration of at least 5 μg/mg cell wall material.

9. A yarn or a fabric comprising the cotton fiber of claim 7 .

10. A yarn or a fabric comprising the cotton fiber of claim 8 .
