Abstract

A printed energy storage device includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and a separator between the first and the second electrode. At least one of the first electrode, the second electrode, and the separator includes frustules, for example of diatoms. The frustules may have a uniform or substantially uniform property or attribute such as shape, dimension, and/or porosity. A property or attribute of the frustules can also be modified by applying or forming a surface modifying structure and/or material to a surface of the frustules. A membrane for an energy storage device includes frustules. An ink for a printed film includes frustules.

Claims (36)

1. A printed energy storage device comprising:

a cathode; and

an anode,

wherein at least one of the cathode and the anode includes frustules, and wherein the frustules comprise a surface modifying structure comprising an electrode active material.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the frustules have a substantially uniform property, the substantially uniform property including at least one of a frustule shape, a frustule dimension, a frustule porosity, a frustule mechanical strength, a frustule material, and a degree of brokenness of a frustule.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the surface modifying structure covers substantially all surfaces of the frustules.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the surface modifying structure comprises a conductive material.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the surface modifying structure comprises a semiconductor material.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the surface modifying structure comprises zinc-oxide nanostructures.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the surface modifying structure comprises carbon nanostructures.

8. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a separator between the cathode and the anode, the separator comprising:

frustules;

an electrolyte; and

a polymer, wherein the separator is electrically insulating.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the frustules comprise substantially no surface modifying structure.

10. An ink for a printed film, the ink comprising:

a solvent;

at least one of a polymer and a polymer precursor in the solvent; and

frustules dispersed in the solvent,

wherein the frustules comprise a surface modifying structure comprising an electrode active material, and

wherein the ink is configured to be printed to form the printed film, an electrode of an energy storage device comprising the printed film.

11. The ink of claim 10 , wherein the surface modifying structure comprises at least one of carbon nanotubes and zinc-oxide nanostructures.

12. The ink of claim 10 , wherein the frustules comprise a plurality of broken frustule portions, the plurality of broken frustule portions each comprising a plurality of perforations.

13. The ink of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of broken frustule portions further comprise metallic nanostructures, wherein the metallic nanostructures comprise silver nanostructures on a surface of the broken frustule portions.

14. The ink of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the plurality of perforations comprises a surface having the silver nanostructures.

15. The ink of claim 13 , further comprising an ultraviolet light sensitive polymer precursor.

16. The ink of claim 15 , wherein the ultraviolet light sensitive polymer precursor is sensitive to an optical radiation having a wavelength shorter than a dimension of the plurality of perforations.

17. The printed energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the surface modifying structure comprises a thickness between 10 nanometers and 500 nanometers.

18. The device of claim 8 , wherein the frustules have a substantially uniform property.

19. The device of claim 18 , wherein the substantially uniform property comprises at least one of a frustule shape, a frustule dimension, a frustule porosity, a frustule mechanical strength, a frustule material, and a degree of brokenness of a frustule.

20. An energy storage device comprising a separator between electrodes of an energy storage device, the separator comprising:

frustules;

an electrolyte; and

a polymer,

wherein the separator is electrically insulating, and

wherein the frustules have a substantially uniform property, the substantially uniform property comprising at least one of a frustule porosity, a frustule mechanical strength, a frustule material, and a degree of brokenness of a frustule.
