Abstract

A relationship-based people matching system and method matches people in accordance with inferences of preferences from usage behaviors that include the explicit establishing of relationships, including directionally distinct relationships, by users. The usage behaviors may further comprise behaviors such as establishing subscriptions and the tagging of computer-implemented objects. The matching may be performed in response to a search request. Expressions of interest between matched people may be performed by the matched people through establishment of computer-implemented relationships. An explanation for the matching of matched people that references computer-implemented relationships may be delivered.

Claims (46)

1. A people matching method, comprising:

establishing a computer-implemented directionally distinct relationship between a first person who is a first user of a computer-implemented system and a second person who is a second user of the computer-implemented system, wherein the establishing of the directionally distinct relationship is explicitly performed by the first person;

receiving a match of the first person with a third person who is a third user of the computer-implemented system, wherein the match is generated by a processor-based device and is based, at least in part, on an inference of a preference from a plurality of usage behaviors associated with the computer-implemented system, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is the establishing of the directionally distinct relationship; and

expressing an interest, responsive to the match, with respect to the third person by the first person, wherein the expressing of the interest comprises the first person establishing a computer-implemented directionally distinct relationship between the first person and the third person.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the match of the first person with the third person, wherein the match is generated in response to a search request by the first person.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the match of the first person with the third person, wherein the match is based on the inference of the preference from the plurality of usage behaviors, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is establishing a subscription, wherein the subscription delivers content authored by the second user.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the match of the first person with the third person, wherein the match is based on the inference of the preference from the plurality of usage behaviors, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is a tagging of a computer-implemented object for future reference.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an explanation for the match, wherein the explanation comprises a reference to a computer-implemented relationship between the second person and the third person.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, in response to the expressing of the interest with respect to the third person by the first person, an expression of interest by the third person with respect to the first person.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving the expression of interest by the third person with respect to the first person, wherein the expression of interest by the third person with respect to the first person comprises establishing a computer-implemented subscribing relationship, wherein the subscribing relationship comprises delivering content authored by the first person.

8. A computer-implemented people matching system, comprising one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:

a relationship management function that enables a first person who is a first user of a computer-implemented system to establish a computer-implemented directionally distinct relationship between the first person and a second person who is a second user of the computer-implemented system, wherein the directionally distinct relationship is explicitly established by the first person;

a people matching function that generates a match comprising the first person and a third person who is a third user of the computer-implemented system, wherein the match is based, at least in part, on an inference of a preference from a plurality of usage behaviors, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is the establishing of the directionally distinct relationship; and

an expression of interest function that enables the first person, responsive to the match, to express an interest to the third person in establishing a computer-implemented relationship between the first person and the third person.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

the people matching function, wherein the people matching function generates the match in response to a search request performed by the first person.

10. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

the plurality of usage behaviors, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is establishing a subscription, wherein the subscription delivers content authored by the second person.

11. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

the plurality of usage behaviors, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is a tagging of a computer-implemented object, wherein the tagging is performed by the third person.

12. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

an explanatory function that delivers to the first person an explanation for the match, wherein the explanation comprises a reference to a computer-implemented relationship between the second person and the third person.

13. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

a mutual expression of interest function that enables the third person to reciprocate an expression of interest from the first person to the third person.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising:

the mutual expression of interest function, wherein the third person applies the mutual expression of interest function to establish a subscription relationship that delivers content authored by the first person to the third person.

15. A computer-implemented people matching system, comprising one or more processor-based devices configured to execute:

a relationship management function that enables a first person who is a first user of a computer-implemented system to establish a computer-implemented directionally distinct relationship between the first person and a second person who is a second user of the computer-implemented system, wherein the directionally distinct relationship is explicitly established by the first person;

a people matching function that generates a match comprising the first person and a third person who is a third user of the computer-implemented system, wherein the match is based, at least in part, on an inference of a preference from a plurality of usage behaviors, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is the establishing of the directionally distinct relationship by the first person; and

an explanatory function that delivers an explanation for the match to the first person, wherein the explanation comprises a reference to a computer-implemented relationship between the second person and the third person.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

the people matching function, wherein the people matching function generates the match in response to a search request by the first user.

17. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

the plurality of usage behaviors, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is establishing a subscription, wherein the subscription delivers content authored by the second user.

18. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

the plurality of usage behaviors, wherein one of the plurality of usage behaviors is a user tagging of a computer-implemented object for future reference.

19. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

the explanation, wherein the explanation comprises a reference to a plurality of computer-implemented relationships, wherein each of the plurality of computer-implemented relationships is between the third person and each of a plurality of other persons who are each a user of the computer implemented system.

20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising:

the plurality of computer-implemented relationships, wherein each of the plurality of computer-implemented relationships are directionally distinct.
