Abstract

A device in a wireless communication system, comprising a transmitter for transmitting information over a plurality of frequency bands, a receiver for receiving information over a plurality of frequency bands and a multiple-band antenna electrically connected to said transmitter and said receiver, wherein said multiple-band antenna is comprised of a first feed point configured to electrically connect said multiple-band antenna to said transmitter and said receiver, wherein said multiple-band antenna forms a first antenna type and a second feed point configured to electrically connect said multiple-band antenna to said transmitter and said receiver, wherein said multiple-band antenna forms a second antenna type.

Claims (23)

1. A device in a wireless communication system, comprising:

a transmitter for transmitting information over a plurality of frequency bands;

a receiver for receiving information over a plurality of frequency bands; and

a multiple-band antenna electrically connected to said transmitter and said receiver,

wherein said multiple-band antenna is comprised of:

a ground area formed in a first plane;

a shorting member formed in a second plane perpendicular to the first plane;

a radiating member having a first portion connected at one end to said shorting member, the first portion being formed in said second plane and having a second portion contiguous with said first portion at an opposite end remote from said one end and said connection to the shorting member, the second portion being formed in a third plane spaced from said first plane;

a first feed point electrically connected to said first portion of the radiating element; and

a second feed point electrically connected to the second portion of the radiating member, wherein the radiating memeber is configured to form an antenna of a first antenna type when excited at said first feed point and an antenna of a second antenna type when excited at said second feed point, the antennas of said first antenna type and second antenna type being formed of said contiguous first and second portions of the radiating member, the antenna of the first antenna type is a first planar inverted F type antenna including a spiral slot and the antenna of the second antenna type is a second planar inverted F type antenna including an L-shaped slot.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein said first antenna type operates at least a first frequency band, a second frequency band, and a third frequency band.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein said third frequency band exceeds said second frequency band, and said second frequency band exceeds said first frequency band.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein said second antenna type operates at least a fourth frequency band.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein said first feed point and said second feed point are differentially and electrically connected to said transmitter, said receiver, or both.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein said first feed point and said second feed point are both connected through a single electrical connector to a transmitter, a receiver, or both.

7. A multiband antenna comprising:

a ground area formed in a first plane;

a shorting member formed in a second plane perpendicular to the first plane;

a radiating member having a first portion connected at one end to said shorting member, the first portion being formed in said second plane and having a second portion contiguous with said first portion at an opposite end remote from said one end and said connection to the shorting member, the second portion being formed in a third plane spaced from said first plane;

a first feed point electrically connected to said first portion of the radiating element; and

a second feed point electrically connected to the second portion of the radiating member, wherein the radiating member is configured to form an antenna of a first antenna type when excited at said first feed point and an antenna of a second antenna type when excited at said second feed point, the antennas of said first antenna type and second antenna type being formed of said contiguous first and second portions of the radiating member, the antenna of the first antenna type is a first planar inverted F type antenna including a spiral slot and the antenna of the second antenna type is a second planar inverted F type antenna including an L-shaped slot.

8. The multiband antenna of claim 7 , wherein antenna of the first antenna type is configured to have at least three different resonant frequencies.

9. The multiband antenna of claim 7 , wherein antenna of the second antenna type is configured to have one resonant frequency.
