Abstract

A method, apparatus and system for reducing download of redundant attachments to a communication device from a server is provided. An identifier of attachment to a message, for transmission from the server to the communication device, is compared with identifiers of attachments already stored in a memory at the communication device. The communication device is caused to retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory if a match is found between the identifier and the identifiers of attachments already stored in the memory.

Claims (36)

1. A method for implementation in a content distribution system, the method comprising:

maintaining, at one or more of a server and a device, identifiers of attachments stored in a memory of the device;

comparing, at one or more of the server and the device, an identifier of an attachment to a message, with the identifiers of the attachments stored in the memory of the device, the message for transmission from a server to the device;

when a match is found in the comparing, causing the device to retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory; and,

when no match is found in the comparing, causing the attachment to be transmitted to the device from the server.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, when the comparing occurs at the device, receiving the identifier at the device in lieu of the attachment.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising the device requesting the identifier from the server.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the causing the device to retrieve a copy of the attachment comprises a processor of the device retrieving the copy from the memory.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the causing the attachment to be transmitted to the device from the server comprises the device requesting the attachment from the server.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when the comparing occurs at the server, the causing the device to retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory comprises transmitting the identifier and the message from the server to the device to trigger retrieval of the copy from the memory.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifier and the identifiers each comprise a hash of a respective attachment.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating the identifier.

9. A server of a content distribution system, the server comprising:

a communication interface and a processor configured to:

maintain identifiers of attachments stored in a memory of a device;

compare an identifier of an attachment to a message, with the identifiers of the attachments stored in the memory of the device, the message for transmission from the server to the device using the communication interface;

when a match is found in comparing, cause the device to retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory; and,

when no match is found in the comparing, transmitting the attachment to the device from the server.

10. The server of claim 9 , further comprising a server memory for maintaining the identifiers of attachments stored in the memory of the device.

11. The server of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to cause the device to retrieve the copy of the attachment by transmitting the identifier and the message to the device to trigger retrieval of the copy of the attachment from the memory.

12. The server of claim 9 , wherein the identifier and the identifiers each comprise a hash of a respective attachment.

13. The server of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate the identifier.

14. A device of a content distribution system, the device comprising:

a processor, a communication interface, and a memory for storing attachments and identifiers of the attachments, the processor configured to:

maintain the identifiers of the attachments stored in the memory;

compare an identifier of an attachment to a message, with the identifiers the attachments, the message for transmission from a server to the device;

when a match is found in comparing, retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory; and,

when no match is found in the comparing, cause the attachment to be transmitted from the server to the device via the communication interface.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive, from the server, the identifier in lieu of the attachment.

16. The device of claim 14 , wherein the processor is further configured to request the identifier from the server.

17. The device of claim 14 , wherein the identifier and the identifiers each comprise a hash of a respective attachment.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a computer program, wherein execution of the computer program occurs in a content distribution system, the execution of the computer program for:

maintaining, at one or more of a server and a device, identifiers of attachments stored in a memory of the device;

comparing, at one or more of the server and the device, an identifier of an attachment to a message, with the identifiers of the attachments stored in the memory of the device, the message for transmission from a server to the device;

when a match is found in the comparing, causing the device to retrieve a copy of the attachment from the memory; and,

when no match is found in the comparing, causing the attachment to be transmitted to the device from the server.
