Abstract

Systems and methods for cloning a Wi-Fi access point. A determination is made by a network monitoring device to transition communications between a Wi-Fi device and a first access point (AP) to a second AP. The SSID and the security configuration information, and, optionally, network address translation (NAT) information of the first access point are acquired and provided to a second AP. The second AP instantiates the SSID and the security configuration information and, optionally, the NAT information. The networking monitoring device directs the first AP to cease using the SSID and the security configuration information and, optionally, the NAT information in response to receipt of confirmation that the second AP has instantiated the SSID and the security configuration information and, optionally, the NAT information of the first AP.

Claims (78)

1. A network monitoring device comprising:

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the memory, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising:

receiving via a network transition event information;

determining to transition communications between a Wi-Fi device and a first virtual access point (VAP) to another VAP based on the transition event information;

selecting a second VAP to which to transition the communications from one or more other VAPs;

providing an SSID and a security configuration information of the first VAP to the second VAP via the network;

directing the second VAP to instantiate the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP,

wherein a network monitoring device establishes a link with the second VAP when the Wi-Fi device is associated with the first VAP, and

wherein the network monitoring device receives metrics from the second VAP when the Wi-Fi device is associated with the first VAP; and

tearing down the first VAP in response to determining that communications from the second VAP exceed a measure of performance.

The network monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the transition event information comprises at least one of a measure of a signal strength or a signal quality of the first VAP is below a first threshold, a measure of signal strength or a signal quality of at least one of the one more other VAPs is above a second threshold, a measure of bandwidth utilization of the first VAP is above a third threshold, a measure of bandwidth utilization of at least one of the one more other VAPs is below a fourth threshold, a second Wi-Fi device needs to transition to the first VAP, and the Wi-Fi device is predicted to be moving out of range of the first VAP and into range of at least one of the one more other VAPs.

3. The network monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the operation of selecting a second VAP to which to transition the communications from the one more other VAPs comprises:

receiving metrics from one or more other VAPs;

applying a rule to one or more of the metrics of the one or more other VAPs to select the second VAP from the one or more other VAPs.

The network monitoring device of claim 3 , wherein the metrics comprise at least one of a proximity of the Wi-Fi device to each of the one or more other VAPs, a change in the proximity of the Wi-Fi device to each of the one or more other VAPs, a signal characteristic of each of the one or more other VAPs, a channel availability of each of the one or more other VAPs, and an estimate of a future state of to each of the one or more other VAPs.

5. The network monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the process of providing the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP to the second VAP via the network further comprises providing network address translation (NAT) information of the first VAP to the second VAP.

6. A system for transitioning a connection between access points, the system comprising:

a Wi-Fi device;

a network monitoring device; and

one or more virtual access points (VAPs), wherein each of the one or more VAPs is configured to perform operations comprising:

receiving a probe message from the Wi-Fi device, wherein the probe message comprises an SSID and a MAC address of the Wi-Fi device;

determining whether the Wi-Fi device is known to the VAP from the SSID and the MAC address of the Wi-Fi device;

establishing a link to the network monitoring device when the Wi-Fi device is known to the VAP;

determining via the link whether the Wi-Fi device is associated with a first VAP using the SSID, the MAC address of the Wi-Fi device and a security configuration information of the first VAP; and

providing the network monitoring device metrics of the VAP when the Wi-Fi device is associated with the first VAP;

wherein the network monitoring device is configured to perform operations comprising:

receiving via a network transition event information;

determining to transition communications between a Wi-Fi device and the first VAP to one of the one or more VAPs using the transition event information;

selecting a second VAP from among the one or more VAPs to which to transition the communications from the first VAP;

providing the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP to the second VAP via the network; and

directing the second VAP to instantiate the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP,

wherein communications are established between the Wi-Fi device and the second VAP using the SSID, the MAC address of the Wi-Fi device and the security configuration information of the first VAP, and

wherein the first and second VAPs communicate with a home gateway and wherein the home gateway is configured to perform operations comprising tearing down the first VAP when the home gateway determines that communications from the second VAP exceed a measure of performance.

The system of claim 6 , wherein the transition event information comprises at least one of a measure of a signal strength or a signal quality of the first VAP is below a first threshold, a measure of signal strength or a signal quality of at least one of the one more VAPs is above a second threshold, a measure of bandwidth utilization of the first VAP is above a third threshold, a measure of bandwidth utilization of at least one of the one more VAPs is below a fourth threshold, a second Wi-Fi device needs to transition to the first VAP, and the Wi-Fi device is predicted to be moving out of range of the first VAP and into range of at least one of the one more VAPs.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the operation determining to transition communications between a Wi-Fi device and the first VAP to the second VAP based on the transition event information comprises:

receiving metrics from the one or more VAPs;

applying a rule to one or more of the metrics of the one or more VAPs to select the second VAP from among the one or more VAPs.

The system of claim 8 , wherein the metrics comprise at least one of a proximity of the Wi-Fi device to each of the one or more VAPs, a change in the proximity of the Wi-Fi device to each of the one or more VAPs, a signal characteristic of each of the one or more VAPs, a channel availability of each of the one or more VAPs, and an estimate of a future state of to each of the one or more VAPs.

10. The system of claim 6 , wherein the process of providing the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP to the second VAP via the network further comprises providing network address translation (NAT) information of the first VAP to the second VAP.

11. The system of claim 6 , wherein the Wi-Fi device comprises at least one of a laptop computer, a notebook computer, a PDA, a VoIP phone and a dual network Wi-Fi phone.

12. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first and second VAPs communicate with the Wi-Fi device via a communication protocol selected from the group consisting of IEEE 802.11(a), 802.11(b), 802.11(g), and 802.11(n).

13. A method for transitioning a communication in a network, the method comprising:

receiving by a network monitoring device transition event information;

determining by the network monitoring device to transition communications between a Wi-Fi device and a first virtual access point (VAP) to a another VAP based on the transition event information;

selecting by the monitoring device a second VAP to which to transition the communications from one or more other VAPs;

providing by the monitoring device an SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP to the second VAP via the network;

directing by the network monitoring device the second VAP to instantiate the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP,

wherein the network monitoring device and the second VAP establish a link when the Wi-Fi device is known to the second VAP, and

wherein the network monitoring device receives metrics from the second VAP when the Wi-Fi device is associated with the first VAP; and

tearing down by the network monitoring device the first VAP in response to determining that communications from the second VAP exceed a measure of performance.

The method of claim 13 , wherein the transition event information comprises at least one of a measure of a signal strength or a signal quality of the first VAP is below a first threshold, a measure of signal strength or a signal quality of at least one of the one more other VAPs is above a second threshold, a measure of bandwidth utilization of the first VAP is above a third threshold, a measure of bandwidth utilization of at least one of the one more other VAPs is below a fourth threshold, a second Wi-Fi device needs to transition to the first VAP, and the Wi-Fi device is predicted to be moving out of range of the first VAP and into range of at least one of the one more other VAPs.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein selecting by the monitoring device a second VAP to which to transition the communications from one or more other VAPs comprises:

receiving metrics from one or more other VAPs; and

applying a rule to one or more of the metrics of the one or more other VAPs to select the second VAP from the one or more other VAPs.

The method of claim 15 , wherein the metrics comprise at least one of a proximity of the Wi-Fi device to each of the one or more other VAPs, a change in the proximity of the Wi-Fi device to each of the one or more other VAPs, a signal characteristic of each of the one or more other VAPs, a channel availability of each of the one or more other VAPs, and an estimate of a future state of to each of the one or more other VAP.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein providing the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP to the second VAP via the network further comprises providing network address translation (NAT) information of the first VAP to the second VAP.

18. A method for transitioning a communication in a network, the method comprising:

receiving by one or more virtual access points (VAPs) a probe message from a Wi-Fi device, wherein the probe message comprises an SSID and a MAC address of the Wi-Fi device;

determining by each of the one or more VAPs whether the Wi-Fi device is known to the VAP from the SSID and the MAC address of the Wi-Fi device;

establishing by each of the one or more VAPs a link to a network monitoring device when the Wi-Fi device is known to the VAP;

determining by each of the one or more VAPs via the link whether the Wi-Fi device is associated with a first VAP using the SSID, the MAC address of the Wi-Fi device and a security configuration information of the first VAP;

providing by each of the one or more VAPs the network monitoring device metrics of the VAP when the Wi-Fi device is associated with the first VAP;

receiving by the network monitoring device transition event information;

determining by the network monitoring device to transition communications between a Wi-Fi device and the first VAP to a second VAP selected from the one or more VAPs using the transition event information;

selecting a second VAP from among the one or more VAPs to which to transition the communications from the first VAP;

providing the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP to the second VAP; and

directing the second VAP to instantiate the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP,

wherein communications are established between the Wi-Fi device and the second VAP using the SSID, the MAC address of the Wi-Fi device and the security configuration information of the first VAP, and

wherein the first and second VAPs communicate with a home gateway and wherein the home gateway is configured to perform operations comprising tearing down the first VAP when the home gateway determines that communications from the second VAP exceed a measure of performance.

The method of claim 18 , wherein the transition event information comprises at least one of a measure of a signal strength or a signal quality of the first VAP is below a first threshold, a measure of signal strength or a signal quality of at least one of the one more VAPs is above a second threshold, a measure of bandwidth utilization of the first VAP is above a third threshold, a measure of bandwidth utilization of at least one of the one more VAPs is below a fourth threshold, a second Wi-Fi device needs to transition to the first VAP, and the Wi-Fi device is predicted to be moving out of range of the first VAP and into range of at least one of the one more VAPs.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein determining to transition communications between a Wi-Fi device and the first VAP to the a second VAP comprises:

receiving metrics from the one or more VAPs; and

applying a rule to one or more of the metrics of the one or more VAPs to select the second VAP from among the one or more VAPs.

The method of claim 20 , wherein the metrics comprise at least one of a proximity of the Wi-Fi device to each of the one or more VAPs, a change in the proximity of the Wi-Fi device to each of the one or more VAPs, a signal characteristic of each of the one or more VAPs, a channel availability of each of the one or more VAPs, and an estimate of a future state of to each of the one or more VAP.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein providing the SSID and the security configuration information of the first VAP to the second VAP via the network further comprises providing network address translation (NAT) information of the first VAP to the second VAP.

23. The system of claim 18 , wherein the Wi-Fi device is selected from the group consisting of a laptop computer, a notebook computer, a PDA, a VoIP phone and a dual network Wi-Fi phone.

24. The system of claim 18 , wherein the first and second VAPs communicate with the Wi-Fi device via a communication protocol selected from the group consisting of IEEE 802.11(a), 802.11(b), 802.11(g), and 802.11(n).
