Abstract

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes an axle torque determination module, an engine torque determination module, and an engine torque control module. The axle torque determination module determines an axle torque request based on a driver input and a vehicle speed. The engine torque determination module determines an engine torque request based on the axle torque request and at least one of a turbine speed and whether a clutch of a torque converter is applied. The engine torque control module controls an amount of torque produced by an engine based on the engine torque request.

Claims (34)

1. A system comprising:

an axle torque determination module that determines an axle torque request based on a driver input and a vehicle speed;

an engine torque determination module that determines an engine torque request based on the axle torque request, turbine speed, and whether a clutch of a torque converter is applied; and

an engine torque control module that controls an amount of torque produced by an engine based on the engine torque request.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising a desired engine speed module that determines a desired engine speed, wherein the engine torque determination module determines the engine torque request based on the desired engine speed.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein, when the torque converter clutch is not applied, the desired engine speed module determines the desired engine speed based on the axle torque request, the turbine speed, and a transmission gear.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein, when the torque converter clutch is applied, the desired engine speed module determines the desired engine speed based on the turbine speed and a desired slip in the torque converter.

5. The system of claim 2 further comprising an axle torque adjustment module that adjusts the axle torque request based on a response time of a powertrain system that includes the engine, a transmission, and the torque converter, wherein the engine torque determination module determines the engine torque request based on the adjusted axle torque request.

6. The system of claim 5 further comprising a transmission losses module that determines a scalar and an offset associated with torque losses in the transmission, wherein the engine torque determination module determines the engine torque request based on the scalar and the offset.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the transmission losses module determines the scalar based on a transmission efficiency, a transmission gear ratio, the turbine speed, and the desired engine speed.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the transmission losses module determines the scalar based on a transmission gear.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising an engine speed control module that determines a zero pedal torque based on a difference between a measured engine speed and a desired engine speed, wherein the axle torque determination module determines the axle torque request based on the zero pedal torque.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the engine torque control module controls the amount of torque produced by the engine based on the zero pedal torque when the axle torque request is less than a predetermined value.

11. A method comprising:

determining an axle torque request based on a driver input and a vehicle speed;

determining an engine torque request based on the axle torque request, a turbine speed, and whether a clutch of a torque converter is applied; and

controlling an amount of torque produced by an engine based on the engine torque request.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

determining a desired engine speed; and

determining the engine torque request based on the desired engine speed.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising determining the desired engine speed based on the axle torque request, the turbine speed, and a transmission gear when the torque converter clutch is not applied.

14. The method of claim 12 further comprising determining the desired engine speed based on the turbine speed and a desired slip in the torque converter when the torque converter clutch is applied.

15. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

adjusting the axle torque request based on a response time of a powertrain system that includes the engine, a transmission, and the torque converter; and

determining the engine torque request based on the adjusted axle torque request.

16. The method of claim 15 further comprising:

determining a scalar and an offset associated with torque losses in the transmission; and

determining the engine torque request based on the scalar and the offset.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising determining the scalar based on a transmission efficiency, a transmission gear ratio, the turbine speed, and the desired engine speed.

18. The method of claim 16 further comprising determining the scalar based on a transmission gear.

19. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

determining a zero pedal torque based on a difference between a measured engine speed and a desired engine speed; and

determining the axle torque request based on the zero pedal torque.

20. The method of claim 19 further comprising controlling the amount of torque produced by the engine based on the zero pedal torque when the axle torque request is less than a predetermined value.
