Abstract

A method at a mobile device, and the mobile device, the method selecting a subset of radio access technologies available to the mobile device over which a predetermined set of services on the mobile device is available; and deactivating monitoring, or reducing a monitoring frequency, of at least one radio access technology not within the selected subset of radio access technologies.

Claims (34)

1. A method at a mobile device comprising:

selecting a subset of radio access technologies (RATs) available to the mobile device over which a predetermined set of services on the mobile device is available; and

deactivating monitoring, or reducing a monitoring frequency, of at least one RAT not within the selected subset of radio access technologies;

wherein the subset of RATs is a minimally sized subset of RATs over which the predetermined set of services is available.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said selecting comprises:

iterating over each available RAT, wherein:

for each available RAT, including the RAT in the selected subset if a service from the predetermined set of services is available on the RAT and is not available on other RATs of the selected subset.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising, if all services of the predetermined set of services are available over RATs of the selected subset, ending the iterating.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the subset of RATs is a single RAT.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the predetermined set is defined by a user, carrier, or manufacturer of the mobile device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined set varies based on time of day.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined set varies based on a selected profile.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deactivating or reducing is performed during an IDLE mode on the mobile device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the RATs include both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the licensed spectrum includes one or more of global system for mobile communications, code division multiple access, universal mobile telecommunications standard, long term evolution and long term evolution advanced.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the unlicensed spectrum includes at least one of WiFi, WiMAX, and Bluetooth™.

12. A mobile device, comprising:

a processor; and

a communications subsystem;

wherein the processor and communications subsystem cooperate to:

select a subset of radio access technologies (RATs) available to the mobile device over which a predetermined set of services on the mobile device is available; and

deactivate monitoring, or reduce a monitoring frequency, of at least one RAT not within the selected subset of radio access technologies;

wherein the subset of RATs is a minimally sized subset of RATs over which the predetermined set of services is available.

13. The mobile device of claim 12 , wherein the processor and communications subsystem further cooperate to:

iterate over each available RAT, wherein:

for each available RAT, include the RAT in the selected subset if a service from the predetermined set of services is available on the RAT and is not available on other RATs of the selected subset.

14. The mobile device of claim 13 , wherein the processor and communications subsystem further cooperate to:

if all services of the predetermined set of services are available over RATs of the selected subset, end the iteration.

15. The mobile device of claim 12 wherein the subset of RATs is a single RAT.

16. The mobile device of claim 12 wherein the predetermined set is defined by a user, carrier, or manufacturer of the mobile device.

17. The mobile device of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined set varies based on time of day.

18. The mobile device of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined set varies based on a selected profile.

19. The mobile device of claim 12 , wherein the deactivating or reducing is performed during an IDLE mode on the mobile device.

20. The mobile device of claim 12 , wherein the RATs include both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.
