Abstract

A housing including a plurality of openings for receiving fiber optic connectors and protecting the polished end face of the connectors from damage while the connectors are stored within a telecommunications connection cabinet. A module with a plurality of optical fiber cables connected to a first optical fiber cable and terminated by a fiber optic connector. Each of the connectors are inserted within openings in a connector holder for storage and protection until the cables need to be connected to a customer equipment cable.

Claims (31)

1. A fiber optic device for use in a telecommunications cabinet having an optical device mounting area and a separate connector storage area, the fiber optic device comprising:

an optical device including a plurality of output pigtails extending therefrom, the output pigtails having ends terminated by fiber optic connectors; and

an integrally molded connector holder unit that is separate from the optical device, the integrally molded connector holder unit releasably holding a plurality of the fiber optic connectors, the fiber optic connectors including polished end faces, and wherein, when the fiber optic connectors are held by the integrally molded connector holder unit, the polished end faces are enclosed and protected by either separate dust caps or closed-ended openings of the integrally molded connector holder unit.

2. The fiber optic device of claim 1 , wherein the integrally molded connector holder unit includes a latch for releasably mounting the integrally molded connector holder unit at the connector storage area of the cabinet.

3. The fiber optic device of claim 1 , wherein the polished end faces are enclosed and protected by the separate dust caps when the fiber optic connectors are held by the integrally molded connector holder unit.

4. The fiber optic device of claim 1 , wherein the integrally molded connector holder unit releasably holds the plurality of the fiber optic connectors in a row.

5. The fiber optic device of claim 1 , wherein the polished end faces are enclosed and protected by the closed-ended openings of the integrally molded connector holder unit when the fiber optic connectors are held by the integrally molded connector holder unit.

6. The fiber optic device of claim 1 , wherein the integrally molded connector holder unit has a first end positioned opposite from a second end, and wherein a latch is positioned at the first end and a tab is positioned at the second end.

7. The fiber optic device of claim 1 , wherein the integrally molded connector holder unit includes a plurality of openings for receiving the fiber optic connectors.

8. The fiber optic device of claim 7 , wherein latches are provided for retaining the fiber optic connectors within the openings.

9. The fiber optic device of claim 1 , wherein the optical device optically couples an input cable to the output pigtails.

10. The fiber optic device of claim 1 , wherein the optical device can be releasably mounted at the optical device mounting area of the cabinet and the connector holder unit can be releasably mounted at the connector storage area.

11. A telecommunications connection cabinet comprising:

an enclosure defining an interior and an opening covered by at least one access door;

an optical device having a plurality of output pigtails extending outwardly from the optical device, each of the output pigtails being terminated by a fiber optic connector;

a fiber connection location including a plurality of fiber optic adapters, each fiber optic adapter having a front side and a rear side, the front side of each fiber optic adapter being configured to receive the fiber optic connector of one of the output pigtails and the rear side of each fiber optic adapter being configured to receive a fiber optic connector terminating a rear fiber;

a fiber storage location including a panel having a first side at least partially facing the opening and an opposite second side;

at least one connector holder housing mounted to the panel at the fiber storage location, the connector holder housing having a front side and a rear side, the connector holder housing being configured to receive the fiber optic connectors of the splitter output fibers only from the front side of the connector holder housing, the connector holder housing including a plurality of connector holder openings at the front side of the connector holder housing, each connector holder opening being configured to receive one of the fiber optic connectors of the output pigtails, the connector holder housing adapted to be mounted to the panel from the first side of the panel, the connector holder openings being accessible from the first side of the panel when the connector holder housing is mounted to the panel, the connector holder housing being removable from the panel from the first side of the panel, and

wherein the fiber optic connectors of the output pigtails are stored within the connector holder housing at the storage location, and wherein the fiber optic connectors of the splitter output fibers are removed from the connector holder housing and inserted into the front sides of the fiber optic adapters to connect the output pigtails to the rear fibers.

12. The telecommunications connection cabinet of claim 11 , wherein the optical device couples an input cable to the output pigtails.

13. A method of increasing capacity of a telecommunications cabinet by adding an optical device having a plurality of output pigtails terminated by fiber optic connectors, the method comprising:

pre-inserting a plurality of the fiber optic connectors that terminate the output pigtails into a connector holder that does not include a functional fiber optic adapter; and

positioning the optical device and the connector holder within the cabinet, the connector holder being positioned within the cabinet while the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors remain within the connector holder;

wherein the connector holder is mounted in the cabinet at a location separate from the optical device.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the optical device is preconfigured with an input cable that is optically coupled to the output pigtails via the optical device, wherein the input cable is optically connected to an outside cable that is routed into the cabinet.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the input cable is optically connected to the outside cable by a splice.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein when the connector holder is positioned within the cabinet, the output pigtails corresponding to the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors are routed within the cabinet while the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors remain within the connector holder.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the output pigtails corresponding to the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors are routed within cable management channels within the cabinet while the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors remain within the connector holder.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the output pigtails corresponding to the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors are routed in a slack storage arrangement within the cabinet while the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors remain within the connector holder.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein when the connector holder is positioned within the cabinet, the connector holder is connected to a panel within the cabinet by a snap-fit connection while the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors remain within the connector holder.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the cabinet includes a termination field including a plurality of fiber optic adapters that are pre-cabled to customer premises, and wherein the pre-inserted fiber optic connectors are configured to be removed from the connector holder and inserted into the adapters of the termination field to provide service to the customer premises after the connector holder has been positioned within the cabinet.
