Abstract

Techniques are disclosed for purchasing, accessing, consuming, and/or providing electronic content using an electronic bookshelf (eBookshelf) system. The eBookshelf system can be used by accessing a touchscreen-based user interface and/or local hardware controls and/or a remote control. A user's personal library of eBooks and/or any other electronic content can be displayed and/or aurally presented. In addition, the vast content of commercial retailers can also be displayed for browsing and purchase/rental. If the user identifies a content selection on the eBookshelf system that he/she wishes to consume, it can be readily transferred from the system to a personal content consuming device. Multiple eBookshelf systems can be attached to one another to extend the length and/or height of the eBookshelf. Accessing the eBookshelf system by a user ID allows multiple users to enjoy a personally customized version of the system.

Claims (54)

1. An electronic bookshelf system, comprising:

a housing for housing electronics of the system, the electronics including a processor;

a touchscreen display operatively coupled to the electronics, and having a display area; and

a user interface at least one of executable and controllable by the processor and configured to

present a virtual bookshelf that includes a plurality of digital content items via the display such that the virtual bookshelf replicates an appearance of physical items stored on a bookshelf,

in response to a scroll input or a change in display criteria, change the digital content items presented on the virtual bookshelf, wherein the plurality of digital content items includes a mix of user-owned digital content and content for sale presented together on the virtual bookshelf, and the content for sale can be sampled by a user of the system with an option to purchase,

in response to a currently presented digital content item being selected, present the selected digital content item in an overlaid fashion across unselected digital content items, such that the selected digital content item is splayed open and its pages flipped through in response to further user input while at least portions of the unselected digital content items not covered by the selected digital content item continue to be presented so as to appear as underlying the selected digital content item,

in response to a return input, return the selected digital content item to its shelved position on the virtual bookshelf, and

in response to a transfer input, determine a personal electronic device that is communicatively coupled with the system and transfer the selected digital content item to the personal electronic device,

wherein the user interface includes a full screen mode and a regular screen mode, the full screen mode utilizing more of the display area than the regular screen mode to present the digital content items;

wherein the housing and touchscreen display each has an elongated rectangular shape that is at least two times wider in the horizontal direction than it is tall in the vertical direction, such that the system is sized to fit on a physical bookshelf.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the touchscreen display is 24 to 36 inches long in the horizontal direction and 10 to 14 inches tall in the vertical direction.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the system further includes an interconnect circuitry, such that the system can be communicatively coupled with one or more additional such systems in the vertical and/or horizontal directions to provide a bookcase format without a physical bookcase.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the interconnect circuitry facilitates a wireless communication link to wirelessly communicatively couple the system with the one or more additional systems.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the housing is sized to occupy space on a bookshelf of a physical bookcase, the space being about 2 to 3 feet long and about 10 to 14 inches tall.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the mix of user-owned digital content and content for sale further includes borrowed content.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein one or more types of content included in the mix of user-owned digital content are user-configurable.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the user interface is further configured to provide icons on at least a portion of the presented digital content items to indicate whether the presented digital content items are user-owned digital content or digital content that is available for purchase.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the user interface is further configured to present, when in the regular screen mode, a menu that allows content searching, content buying, and system configuration.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein at least some spines of the presented digital content items are shown side by side with no space between the items.

The system of claim 10 wherein the user interface is further configured to provide an animation that shows a digital content item being virtually pulled from the bookshelf and laid on its side in response to a user selecting that digital content item via a touch-based gesture on the spine of that digital content item.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the user interface is further configured to allow the selected digital content item to be perused via swipe gestures that trigger virtual page turning of that selected digital content item.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the full screen mode allows only digital content to be displayed at least a portion of the time while the full screen mode is engaged, and the regular screen mode shows both digital content and a quick navigation menu.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the system includes an audio module to aurally present a selected one of the digital content items.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the system is capable of displaying digital content from commercial retailers via a network connection.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein the user interface allows for multiple users of the system, each user having credentials to allow a personalized user experience.

17. An electronic bookshelf system, comprising:

a housing for housing electronics of the system, the electronics including a processor, memory, and a communication module that allows access to digital content from commercial retailers via a network connection;

a touchscreen display that includes a display area; and

a user interface at least one of executable and controllable by the processor and configured to

present a virtual bookshelf that includes a plurality of digital content items via the display such that the virtual bookshelf replicates an appearance of physical items stored on a bookshelf,

in response to a scroll input or a change in display criteria, change the digital content items presented on the virtual bookshelf, wherein the plurality of digital content items includes a mix of user-owned digital content and content for sale presented together on the virtual bookshelf, and the content for sale can be sampled by a user of the system with an option to purchase,

in response to a currently presented digital content item being selected, present the selected digital content item in an overlaid fashion across unselected digital content items, such that the selected digital content item is splayed open and its pages flipped through in response to further user input while at least portions of the unselected digital content items not covered by the selected digital content item continue to be presented so as to appear as underlying the selected digital content item,

in response to a return input, return the selected digital content item to its shelved position on the virtual bookshelf, and

in response to a transfer input, determine a personal electronic device that is communicatively coupled with the system and transfer the selected digital content item to the personal electronic device, and

wherein the user interface includes a full screen mode and a regular screen mode, the full screen mode utilizing more of the display area than the regular screen mode to present the digital content items;

wherein the system has a form factor of a bookshelf such that the housing and touchscreen display each has an elongated rectangular shape that is wider in the horizontal direction than it is tall in the vertical direction.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the mix of user-owned digital content further includes borrowed content, and the user interface is further configured to provide icons on binders for each presented digital content item to indicate whether the presented digital content items are user-owned digital content, borrowed content, or digital content that is available for purchase.

19. An electronic bookshelf system, comprising:

a housing for housing electronics of the system, the electronics including a processor and a communication module that allows access to digital content via a network connection;

a display that includes a display area; and

a user interface at least one of executable and controllable by the processor and configured to

present a virtual bookshelf that includes a plurality of digital content items via the display such that the virtual bookshelf replicates an appearance of physical items stored on a bookshelf, and at least some spines of the presented digital content items are shown side by side with no space between the items,

in response to a scroll input or a change in display criteria, change the digital content items presented on the virtual bookshelf, wherein the plurality of digital content items includes a mix of user-owned digital content and content for sale presented together on the virtual bookshelf, and the content for sale can be sampled by a user of the system with an option to purchase,

in response to a currently presented digital content item being selected, present the selected digital content item in an overlaid fashion across unselected digital content items, such that the selected digital content item is splayed open and its pages flipped through in response to further user input while at least portions of the unselected digital content items not covered by the selected digital content item continue to be presented so as to appear as underlying the selected digital content item,

in response to a return input, return the selected digital content item to its shelved position on the virtual bookshelf, and

in response to a transfer input, determine a personal electronic device that is communicatively coupled with the system and transfer the selected digital content item to the personal electronic device,

wherein the user interface includes a full screen mode and a regular screen mode, the full screen mode utilizing more of the display area than the regular screen mode to present the digital content items.

20. The system of claim 19 wherein the user interface is further configured to at least one of:

show a digital content item being virtually pulled from the bookshelf in response to a user selecting that item via a touch-based gesture on a spine of that digital content item;

allow the selected digital content item to be perused via swipe gestures that trigger virtual page turning of that selected digital content; and

allow for multiple users of the system, each user having credentials to allow a personalized user experience.

21. The system of claim 19 wherein the user interface is further configured to provide icons on at least some of the presented digital content item to indicate whether the presented digital content items are user-owned digital content or digital content that is available for purchase.

22. The system of claim 17 , wherein the touchscreen display is 24 to 36 inches long in the horizontal direction and 10 to 14 inches tall in the vertical direction.
