Abstract

Components, subassemblies, systems, and/or methods for continuously variable transmissions (CVT) are provided. In one aspect, a control system is adapted to facilitate a change in the ratio of a CVT. A control system includes a control reference nut coupled to a feedback cam and operably coupled to a skew cam. In some cases, the skew cam is configured to interact with carrier plates of a CVT. Various inventive feedback cams and skew cams can be used to facilitate shifting the ratio of a CVT. In some transmissions described, the planet subassemblies include legs configured to cooperate with the carrier plates. In some cases, a neutralizer assembly is operably coupled to the carrier plates. A shift cam and a traction sun are adapted to cooperate with other components of the CVT to support operation and/or functionality of the CVT. Among other things, shift control interfaces for a CVT are provided.

Claims (36)

1. A method for controlling a continuously variable transmission (CVT), wherein the CVT comprises a traction sun and a plurality of traction planets operably coupled to a carrier plate and to the traction sun, the method comprising:

providing a skew-based control system comprising

a control reference nut mounted coaxially with a longitudinal axis of the CVT,

a feedback cam operably coupled to the control reference nut and to the traction sun, the feedback cam positioned coaxially with the control reference nut, wherein the carrier plate is positioned coaxially with the feedback cam, and

a skew cam coupled to the feedback cam and to the carrier plate, the skew cam configured to rotate the carrier plate about the longitudinal axis; and

operably coupling a neutralizer assembly to the skew-based control system, the neutralizer assembly configured to balance a plurality of axial forces generated in the CVT during operation.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feedback cam is configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the CVT.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the feedback cam is configured to translate axially along the longitudinal axis.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the skew cam is configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the CVT.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the skew cam is configured to translate axially along the longitudinal axis.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neutralizer assembly is operably coupled to the skew cam.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a planetary gear set operably coupled to the control reference nut.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feedback cam comprises:

a generally elongated cylindrical body having a first end and a second end;

a bearing race located on the first end;

a threaded portion located on the first end; and

a splined portion located on the second end.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising a flange located on the second end.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the splined portion is formed on an outer circumference of the cylindrical body.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the splined portion is formed on an inner circumference of the flange.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neutralizer assembly comprises:

a first resistance member configured to generate a force in a first axial direction;

a second resistance member configured to generate a force in a second axial direction; and

a translating resistance cap operably coupled to the skew-based control system, the translating resistance cap configured to separately engage each of the first and the second resistance members.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the translating resistance cap is operably coupled to a first carrier plate of the CVT.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and the second resistance members and the translating resistance cap are mounted coaxially about a longitudinal axis of the CVT.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the skew-based control system further comprises:

a control reference source configured to provide a control reference indicative of a desired operating condition of the transmission;

a feedback source configured to, provide a feedback indicative of a current operating condition of the transmission;

a sun position locker operably coupled to the traction sun, the sun position locker configured to selectively hold an axial position of the traction sun;

a skew angle coordinator operably coupled to the traction planets; and

a decision process module configured to compare the control reference to the feedback, the decision process module configured to generate a signal based at least in part on the comparison, the signal configured to be passed to the sun position locker and to the skew angle coordinator.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the sun position locker is configured to selectively hold an axial position of the traction sun based at least in part on the signal of the decision process module.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the skew angle coordinator is configured to determine a skew angle command based at least in part on the signal of the decision process module.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein operably coupling a neutralizer assembly comprises providing first and second resistance members configured to provide a resistive force in first and second axial directions, respectively.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of sensing an axial force imparted on a traction sun during operation of the CVT.
