Abstract

A tool ( 1000 ) includes a mold defining a cavity ( 1002 ). The cavity can be for receiving a glass layer ( 402 ). A floating core insert ( 1001 ) can be placed in the cavity to apply a preloading force against a first major face of the glass layer, preclude an overmolding operation on the first major face, and allow overmolding only on minor faces of the glass layer when polymeric material ( 1100 ) is injected into runners ( 1018,1019,1020 ) of the tool.

Claims (24)

1. A method, comprising:

positioning a glass layer in a cavity of a mold;

placing a floating core insert in the cavity to apply a preloading force against a major face of the glass layer; and

injecting polymeric material into the cavity and passing through a runner in the floating core insert, the passing the polymeric material through the runner in the floating core insert effective to apply an additional loading force against the major face of the glass layer;

the polymeric material forming an overmold for the glass layer on minor faces and not on the major face.

2. The method of claim 1 , the injecting comprising altering an introduction force of the polymeric material into the mold across time.

3. The method of claim 2 , the altering comprising introducing the polymeric material into the cavity with a lesser force at an earlier time and a greater force at a later time.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising reducing lateral movement of the glass layer in the cavity.

5. The method of claim 4 , the reducing with one or more compressible pads biased between the floating core insert and the glass layer.

6. The method of claim 1 , the floating core insert to apply the preloading force with one or more springs.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising limiting longitudinal translation of the floating core insert.

8. The method of claim 7 , the limiting with a flange of the floating core insert and a recess of the mold complementary to the flange.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising floating the floating core insert in the cavity.

10. The method of claim 9 , the floating less than 0.10 millimeters.

11. The method of claim 1 , the positioning the glass layer in the cavity of the mold positioning the glass layer in a three plate cold runner mold.

12. The method of claim 1 , the minor faces comprising one or more stair steps.

13. The method of claim 1 , the major face being planar.

14. The method of claim 1 , one of the minor faces being curvilinear in shape.

15. The method of claim 1 , the application of the additional loading force increasing an area flooded with polymeric material.

16. The method of claim 15 , the increase to the area flooded with the polymeric material including tabs, pads, or lakes.

17. The method of claim 1 , the application of the additional loading force pressing the major face of the glass layer against a seating plane of the cavity of the mold.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the major face is the largest face.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the glass layer includes the major face and a second, smaller major face, the polymeric material forming the overmold for the glass layer on the minor faces and not the second, smaller major face.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the additional loading force is effective to create a clean and flash-free seamline between the polymeric material and the major face.
