Abstract

A system is described for managing administration of medical care. The system can include a patient record system that contains electronic records for patients in a hospital. The electronic records may include scheduling information for medicine administration to the patient. A display terminal can be connected to the patient record system and be configured to read an RFID tag on the patient. The display terminal can then identify the patient and display the patient's medicine schedule.

Claims (28)

1. A wireless terminal for use in a medical care administration management system, comprising:

a code scanner, configured to read scan codes;

a processor, configured to determine whether the scan codes correspond to patient data or instructions; and

a wireless transceiver, configured to wirelessly transmit the scan codes read by the code scanner to a system computer;

wherein the processor is further configured to determine whether a scan code corresponding to an instruction can be performed locally, and is further configured to perform the instruction locally without transmitting the instruction to the system computer;

wherein the wireless transceiver is further configured to communicate with the system computer if a scan code is to be transmitted to the system computer, and the wireless transceiver is further configured to transmit scan codes to the system computer during scheduled communication sessions;

wherein the processor includes a data processing module which is configured to determine whether a scan code instruction is an immediate instruction, and is configured to transmit an immediate instruction to the system computer prior to the next scheduled communication session with the system computer; and

wherein the wireless terminal further comprises a scheduling module ( 182 ) configured to track elapsed time after a predetermined medication administration time and will generate an alert or notification message if the elapsed time exceeds a predetermined latency time.

2. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , wherein the wireless terminal is configured to store user information and transmit the user information with the scan codes read by the code scanner to the system computer.

3. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is configured to communicate with the system computer over a computer network.

4. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , wherein the code scanner is configured to read two-dimensional machine readable codes.

5. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , wherein the code scanner is configured to read barcodes.

6. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , further comprising an additional code scanner.

7. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , wherein a scan code corresponds to a binary number comprising a plurality of bits, and wherein one of the plurality of bits indicates whether the scan code corresponds to patient data or an instruction.

8. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , wherein the code scanner is configured to read a two-dimensional data dot encoding a scan code from an array of data dots having a center-to-center spacing between adjacent data dots of less than about 30 mm.

9. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is further configured to transfer at least one of the patient data and the instructions to the system computer during a scheduled communication session with the system computer.

10. The wireless terminal of claim 1 , wherein the system computer is configured to communicate with at least one peripheral system, and wherein the scan codes corresponding to instructions comprise instructions to be performed by the at least one peripheral system.

11. The wireless terminal of claim 10 , wherein the at least one peripheral system includes at least one of a messaging system, a pharmacy system, a laboratory system, and a patient record system.

12. A method of controlling processes in a wireless communication system, comprising:

reading a scan code;

receiving a read scan code into a wireless terminal;

analyzing the read scan code on the wireless terminal to determine whether the scan code corresponds to patient data or an instruction; and if the scan code corresponds to an instruction;

determining if the instruction is to be performed locally or on a system computer, and wherein:

if the instruction is to be performed locally in the wireless terminal, executing the instruction in the wireless terminal without transmitting the instruction to the system computer; and

if the instruction is to be executed by the system computer, transmitting the scan code corresponding to the instruction to the system computer for execution during a scheduled communication session with the system computer;

determining whether a scan code instruction is an immediate instruction and if it is, transmitting the immediate instruction to the system computer prior to the next scheduled communication session with the system computer; and

tracking elapsed time after a predetermined medication administration time and generating an alert or notification message if the elapsed time exceeds a predetermined latency time.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising sending instructions to a peripheral system for execution.
