Abstract

A method and apparatus for heating and/or pressing sealant of an insulating glass unit. The apparatus may include an oven and a press. The oven includes a detector that detects an optical property of the insulating glass unit. The detected optical property is used to regulate the amount of energy applied to the insulating glass unit to adjust the amount of energy applied to the sealant. The press may include a displacement transducer that detects a pre-pressed thickness of the insulating glass unit. The measured pre-pressed thickness is used to automatically select a press thickness from a set of pressed IGU thicknesses.

Claims (13)

1. An insulating glass unit press for processing a series of insulating glass units, wherein each of the insulating glass units having glass lites spaced apart by a spacer frame, the press comprising:

a) a bar code reader is configured to read information on a bar code affixed to an insulating glass unit that identifies a desired pressed thickness of the insulating glass unit to which the bar code is affixed;

b) a controller coupled to said bar code reader; and,

c) pressing members coupled to the controller, the pressing members are spaced apart by a distance controlled by said controller, said controller being programmed to set said distance between said pressing members to achieve said desired pressed thickness of the insulating glass unit to which said bar code is affixed.

2. An insulating glass unit press for processing a series of insulating glass units, wherein each of the insulating glass units having glass files spaced apart by a spacer frame, the press comprising:

a) a bar code reader is configured to determine the type of glass of each lite of an insulating glass unit, the type of glass in each glass lite indicated on a bar code affixed to the insulating glass unit that corresponds to a desired pressed thickness of the insulating glass unit to which the bar code is affixed;

b) a controller coupled to said bar code reader; and,

c) pressing members coupled to the controller, the pressing members are spaced apart by a distance controlled by said controller, said controller being programmed to set said distance between said pressing members to achieve said desired pressed thickness for the insulating glass unit to which said bar code is affixed.

3. An insulating glass unit press for processing a series of insulating glass units, wherein each of the insulating glass units having glass lites spaced apart by a spacer frame, the press comprising:

a) a bar code reader is configured to determine the type of glass, thickness, and strength of each lite of an insulating glass unit, the type of glass, thickness, and strength in each glass lite indicated on a bar code affixed to the insulating glass unit that corresponds to a desired pressed thickness of the insulating glass unit to which the bar code is affixed;

b) a controller coupled to said bar code reader; and,

c) pressing members coupled to the controller, the pressing members are spaced apart by a distance controlled by said controller, said controller being programmed to set said distance between said pressing members to provide a force to the insulating glassed unit to which said bar code is affixed.

4. The press of claim 1 wherein the bar code reader reads a bar code attached to each of the insulating glass units in the series of insulating glass units.
