SECONDARY BATTERY ARRANGEMENTS FOR POWERED SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
A power system, for powering a surgical instrument including an end effector and a motor configured to generate at least one motion to effectuate the end effector, includes a primary power source configured to supply a first power to operate the surgical instrument, wherein the primary power source is detachable from the surgical instrument, a secondary power source configured to supply a second power to operate the surgical instrument when the primary power source is detached from the surgical instrument, wherein the secondary power source is rechargeable, and wherein the primary power source is configured to charge the secondary power system, and a power management circuit configured to selectively transmit the first power from the primary power source and the secondary power from the secondary power source to operate the surgical instrument.
1 . A surgical instrument, comprising:
a shaft;
an end effector extending distally from said shaft; and
a housing extending proximally from said shaft, said housing comprising:
a motor configured to generate at least one motion to effectuate said end effector;
a primary power source configured to supply a first power to operate said surgical instrument, wherein said primary power source is detachable from said housing; and
a secondary power source configured to supply a second power to operate said surgical instrument when said primary power source is detached from said housing.
2 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a controller, wherein said secondary power source is configured to supply said second power to operate said controller when said primary power source is detached from said housing.
3 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said primary power source is rechargeable.
4 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said secondary power source is rechargeable.
5 . The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein said primary power source is configured to recharge said secondary power source.
6 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said primary power source comprises a removable battery.
7 . The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein said secondary power source comprises a backup battery.
8 . The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said backup battery is rechargeable, and wherein said removable battery is configured to recharge said backup battery.
9 . A surgical instrument, comprising:
a shaft;
an end effector extending distally from said shaft, said end effector comprising:
an anvil;
a cartridge including a plurality of staples; and
a cutting member movable to cut tissue captured between said anvil and said cartridge; and
a housing extending proximally from said shaft, said housing comprising:
a motor configured to generate at least one motion to move said cutting member between a proximal position and a distal position;
a primary power source configured to supply a first power to operate said motor, wherein said primary power source is detachable from said housing; and
a secondary power source configured to supply a second power to operate said motor when said primary power source is detached from said housing, wherein said secondary power source is configured to supply said second power to operate said motor to retract said cutting member to said proximal position.
10 . The surgical instrument of claim 9 , further comprising a controller, wherein said secondary power source is configured to supply said second power to operate said controller when said primary power source is detached from said housing.
11 . The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein said primary power source is rechargeable.
12 . The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein said secondary power source is rechargeable.
13 . The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein said primary power source is configured to recharge said secondary power source.
14 . The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein said primary power source comprises a removable battery.
15 . The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein said secondary power source comprises a backup battery.
16 . The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein said backup battery is rechargeable, and wherein said removable battery is configured to recharge said backup battery.
17 . A power system for powering a surgical instrument including an end effector and a motor configured to generate at least one motion to effectuate the end effector, said power system comprising:
a primary power source configured to supply a first power to operate the surgical instrument, wherein said primary power source is detachable from the surgical instrument;
a secondary power source configured to supply a second power to operate the surgical instrument when said primary power source is detached from the surgical instrument, wherein said secondary power source is rechargeable, and wherein said primary power source is configured to charge said secondary power source; and
a power management circuit configured to selectively transmit said first power from said primary power source and said secondary power from said secondary power source to operate the surgical instrument.
18 . The power system of claim 17 , wherein said primary power source comprises a removable battery.
19 . The power system of claim 18 , wherein said secondary power source comprises a backup battery.
20 . The power system of claim 19 , wherein said backup battery is rechargeable, and wherein said removable battery is configured to recharge said backup battery.
