Abstract

Medical devices, systems, methods, and kits for the medialization of a vocal cord are described. An embodiment of a medical device comprises a proximal portion, a distal portion, and an elongate body extending from the proximal portion to the distal portion. The elongate body defines a thread extending from the proximal portion and the distal portion.

Claims (57)

1. A medical device comprising:

a proximal end and a distal end;

a proximal portion having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a first axial length, the inner surface defining a proximal passageway extending through the proximal portion;

a distal portion having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a second axial length, the outer surface of the distal portion defining an atraumatic distal tip, the inner surface of the distal portion defining a distal passageway extending through the distal portion; and

an elongate body attached to and extending between the proximal portion and the distal portion, the elongate body having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a third axial length, the outer surface of the elongate body defining a thread extending from the proximal portion to the distal portion, the inner surface of the elongate body defining a main passageway in communication with the proximal passageway and the distal passageway;

wherein the first axial length extends from the proximal end of the medical device to the elongate body, the second axial length extends from the elongate body to the distal end of the medical device, and the third axial length extends from the proximal portion to the distal portion; and

wherein the third axial length is greater than the first axial length and the second axial length.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the medical device has a longitudinal axis; and

wherein the thread has a free edge and a thickness, the thread extending outward from the outer surface of the elongate body relative to the longitudinal axis of the medical device to the free edge, the thickness of the thread tapering from the outer surface to the free edge.

The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the thread has a first thickness, a second thickness, and a third thickness, each of the first thickness, second thickness, and third thickness disposed on a plane that extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the medical device, the first thickness disposed proximal to the second thickness, the second thickness disposed between the first thickness and third thickness, and the third thickness disposed distal to the second thickness, the second thickness less than the first thickness and the third thickness less than the second thickness.

The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the thread has a first depth, a second depth, and a third depth, each of the first depth, second depth, and third depth extending from the outer surface of the elongate body to the free edge of the thread, the first depth disposed proximal to the second depth, the second depth disposed between the first depth and third depth, and the third depth disposed distal to the second depth, the second depth less than the first depth and the third depth less than the second depth.

5. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion is formed of a first material and the elongate body is formed of a second material; and

wherein the first material is different than the second material.

6. The medical device of claim 5 , wherein the first material is a plastic and the second material is a metal.

7. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion has a first outside diameter, the elongate body has a second outside diameter, and the distal portion has a third outside diameter;

wherein the first outside diameter is greater than the third outside diameter; and

wherein the second outside diameter tapers from the first outside diameter to the third outside diameter.

8. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the medical device has a proximal end, a distal end, and an axial length extending from the proximal end to the distal end; and

wherein the axial length of the medical device is at least 5 millimeters and less than or equal to 17 millimeters.

9. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the medical device has an outside diameter; and

wherein the outside diameter of the medical device is at least 2 millimeters and less than or equal to 9 millimeters.

10. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the medical device has a proximal end, a distal end, and an axial length extending from the proximal end to the distal end;

wherein the axial length of the medical device is equal to about 9.0 millimeters; and

wherein the medical device has an outside diameter equal to about 2.0 millimeters.

11. A medical device comprising:

a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis;

a proximal portion having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a first axial length, the inner surface defining a proximal passageway extending through the proximal portion;

a distal portion having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a second axial length, the outer surface of the distal portion defining an atraumatic distal tip, the inner surface of the distal portion defining a distal passageway extending through the distal portion; and

an elongate body attached to and extending between the proximal portion and the distal portion, the elongate body having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a third axial length, the outer surface of the elongate body defining a thread extending from the proximal portion to the distal portion, the inner surface of the elongate body defining a main passageway in communication with the proximal passageway and the distal passageway, the thread having a free edge and a thickness, the thread extending outward from the outer surface of the elongate body relative to the longitudinal axis of the medical device to the free edge, the thickness of the thread tapering from the outer surface to the free edge;

wherein the first axial length extends from the proximal end of the medical device to the elongate body, the second axial length extends from the elongate body to the distal end of the medical device, and the third axial length extends from the proximal portion to the distal portion; and

wherein the third axial length is greater than the first axial length and the second axial length.

The medical device of claim 11 , wherein the thread has a first thickness, a second thickness, and a third thickness, each of the first thickness, second thickness, and third thickness disposed on a plane that extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the medical device, the first thickness disposed proximal to the second thickness, the second thickness disposed between the first thickness and third thickness, and the third thickness disposed distal to the second thickness, the second thickness less than the first thickness and the third thickness less than the second thickness.

13. The medical device of claim 11 , wherein the thread has a first depth, a second depth, and a third depth, each of the first depth, second depth, and third depth extending from the outer surface of the elongate body to the free edge of the thread, the first depth disposed proximal to the second depth, the second depth disposed between the first depth and third depth, and the third depth disposed distal to the second depth, the second depth less than the first depth and the third depth less than the second depth.

14. The medical device of claim 11 , wherein the distal portion is formed of a first material and the elongate body is formed of a second material; and

wherein the first material is different than the second material.

15. The medical device of claim 14 , wherein the first material is a plastic and the second material is a metal.

16. The medical device of claim 11 , wherein the proximal portion has a first outside diameter, the elongate body has a second outside diameter, and the distal portion has a third outside diameter;

wherein the first outside diameter is greater than the third outside diameter; and

wherein the second outside diameter tapers from the first outside diameter to the third outside diameter.

17. The medical device of claim 11 , wherein the medical device has a proximal end, a distal end, and an axial length extending from the proximal end to the distal end; and

wherein the axial length of the medical device is at least 5 millimeters and less than or equal to 17 millimeters.

18. The medical device of claim 11 , wherein the medical device has an outside diameter; and

wherein the outside diameter of the medical device is at least 2 millimeters and less than or equal to 9 millimeters.

19. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the medical device has a proximal end, a distal end, and an axial length extending from the proximal end to the distal end;

wherein the axial length of the medical device is equal to about 9.0 millimeters; and

wherein the medical device has an outside diameter equal to about 2.0 millimeters.

20. A delivery system comprising:

a light source;

a first light fiber operatively connected to the light source and having a proximal end, a distal end, a length extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the first light fiber, and a first light path defined along the length of the first light fiber;

a handle attached to the first light fiber, the handle moveable between a first configuration and a second configuration;

a second light fiber moveable relative to the handle when the handle is in the first configuration and releasably attached to the handle when the handle is in the second configuration, the second light fiber having a proximal end, a distal end, a length extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the second light fiber, and a second light path defined along the length of the second light fiber, the second light path in communication with the first light path when the handle is in the second configuration; and

a medical device disposed on the second light fiber, the medical device having a proximal end and a distal end and comprising:

a proximal portion having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a first axial length, the inner surface defining a proximal passageway extending through the proximal portion;

a distal portion having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a second axial length, the outer surface of the distal portion defining an atraumatic distal tip, the inner surface of the distal portion defining a distal passageway extending through the distal portion; and

an elongate body attached to and extending between the proximal portion and the distal portion, the elongate body having an outer surface, an inner surface, and a third axial length, the outer surface of the elongate body defining a thread extending from the proximal portion to the distal portion, the inner surface of the elongate body defining a main passageway in communication with the proximal passageway and the distal passageway;

wherein the first axial length extends from the proximal end of the medical device to the elongate body, the second axial length extends from the elongate body to the distal end of the medical device, and the third axial length extends from the proximal portion to the distal portion; and

wherein the third axial length is greater than the first axial length and the second axial length.
