Abstract

A polymorphic antenna, including a metallic template configurable in at least first and second possible different three-dimensional shapes, the antenna, when configured in the at least first and second different three-dimensional shapes, having a common antenna feed point, a common balun coupled to the common antenna feed point; and a common dipole coupled to the common antenna feed point and to the common balun. The antenna operates in a common frequency band when configured in either of the at least first and second different three-dimensional shapes when fed via the common antenna feed point.

Claims (31)

1. An omni-directional antenna, comprising:

a metallic template formed from a single sheet of material, the metallic template bent into a three-dimensional shape to form said antenna, the metallic template forming said antenna defining:

an antenna feed point;

a balun coupled to the antenna feed point, the metallic template bent such that at least a section of the balun provides a base for mounting said antenna, and comprising at least one mounting hole in said base, wherein the at least one mounting hole and the balun are formed in a common section of the metallic template; and

a dipole coupled to the antenna feed point and to the balun.

2. The antenna according to claim 1 , wherein said antenna is free-standing when mounted with said base.

3. The antenna according to claim 1 , and comprising a cable guide.

4. The antenna according to claim 3 , wherein the cable guide and the balun are formed in a common section of the metallic template.

5. The antenna according to claim 3 , wherein the cable guide and an arm of the dipole are formed in a common section of the metallic template.

6. The antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the dipole comprises a first arm having a first shape and a second arm having a second shape different from the first shape.

7. The antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the dipole comprises a first arm and a second arm that is a mirror image of the first arm.

8. The antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one mounting hole is configured to secure the base to a substrate, and wherein the metallic template is bent such that the dipole is at least substantially perpendicular to the base.

9. The antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the dipole comprises a first dipole operative at a first frequency band and a second dipole operative at a second frequency band different from the first frequency band.

10. The antenna according to claim 9 , wherein the antenna feed point comprises a first antenna feed point coupled to the first dipole and a second antenna feed point coupled to the second dipole.

11. The antenna according to claim 10 , wherein the balun comprises a first balun coupled to the first antenna feed point and a second balun coupled to the second antenna feed point.

12. An antenna, comprising:

a metallic template having a plurality of sections formed from a single sheet of metallic material, said metallic template bent into a three-dimensional shape to form said antenna, and wherein said plurality of sections formed from the single sheet of metallic material in the bent metallic template define:

an antenna feed point;

a balun coupled to said antenna feed point;

a first dipole operative at a first frequency band and a second dipole operative at a second frequency band different from said first frequency band, the first dipole and the second dipole coupled to said antenna feed point and to said balun, and

wherein said metallic template is bent into said three-dimensional shape such that at least a section of said balun provides a base for mounting said antenna, and comprising at least one mounting hole in said base, wherein the at least one mounting hole and the balun are formed in a common section of the metallic template.

13. The antenna according to claim 12 , wherein the metallic template is bent into said three-dimensional shape such that the base is substantially perpendicular to the first dipole.

14. The antenna according to claim 12 , wherein the plurality of sections in the metallic temple includes a U-shaped section, and wherein the balun is formed from the U-shaped section of the metallic template.

15. The antenna according to claim 12 , wherein the first dipole comprises a first arm and a second arm that is a mirror image of the first arm, and wherein the second dipole comprises a third arm and a fourth arm that is a mirror image of the third arm.

16. The antenna according to claim 12 , wherein the antenna feed point comprises a first antenna feed point coupled to the first dipole and a second antenna feed point coupled to the second dipole.

17. An antenna, comprising:

a metallic template having a plurality of features formed from a single sheet of metallic material, said metallic template bent into a three-dimensional shape to form said antenna, and wherein said plurality of features formed from the single sheet of metallic material in the bent metallic template define:

an antenna feed point;

a balun coupled to said antenna feed point, said balun comprising a U-shape conducting region in said bent metallic template; and

a first dipole operative at a first frequency band and a second dipole operative at a second frequency band different from said first frequency band, the first dipole and the second dipole coupled to said antenna feed point and to said balun, and
