Abstract

A pre-chamber is provided. In one embodiment, the pre-chamber is part of a two-stroke combustion engine having a cylinder head with a sparkplug receptacle that has a generally frustoconical shape, and the pre-chamber is coupled to the sparkplug receptacle. The pre-chamber may include a cooling jacket with a generally frustoconical shape and a combustion chamber having an upper zone and a lower zone, which may be narrower than the upper zone.

Claims (50)

1. A system, comprising:

a cylinder head having a first side with a mounting interface configured to removably couple to a cylinder of an engine, wherein the cylinder head comprises:

first and second receptacles in a second side, wherein the first and second receptacles are angled inwardly toward one another from the second side toward the first side of the cylinder head; and

a dome-shaped volume recessed into the first side of the cylinder head in fluid communication with the first and receptacles, wherein the dome-shaped volume extends across a central axis of the cylinder head, and a depth of the dome-shaped volume increases toward the central axis; and

a first pre-combustion chamber removably coupled to the first receptacle.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein a first axis of the first receptacle is disposed at a first offset distance away from the central axis of the cylinder head.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein a second axis of the second receptacle is disposed at a second offset distance away from the central axis of the cylinder head.

4. The system of claim 3 , comprising a second pre-combustion chamber removably coupled to the second receptacle in the cylinder head.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein a first axis of the first receptacle is angled at a first angle relative to the central axis of the cylinder head.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the first angle is less than or equal to 25 degrees.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein a second axis of the second receptacle is angled at a second angle relative to the central axis of the cylinder head.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first and second axes are angled inwardly toward one another from the second side toward the first side of the cylinder head.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first and second receptacles intersect with an inwardly curved surface within the dome-shaped volume.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the inwardly curved surface is symmetric relative to the central axis, and the first and second axes of the first and second receptacles are substantially perpendicular relative to the inwardly curved surface.

11. The system of claim 7 , comprising a second pre-combustion chamber removably coupled to the second receptacle in the cylinder head.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the depth is maximum at the central axis.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the dome-shaped volume is defined by an annular interior surface extending circumferentially about the central axis and an inwardly curved surface that curves inwardly from the annular interior surface toward the central axis.

14. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

a first axis of the first receptacle is disposed at a first offset distance away from the central axis of the cylinder head; and

the first axis of the first receptacle is angled at a first angle relative to the central axis of the cylinder head.

The system of claim 14 , wherein the first receptacle comprises a first frustoconical receptacle portion, the first pre-combustion chamber comprises a first frustoconical body portion, and the first frustoconical body portion extends within and overlaps with the first frustoconical receptacle portion.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein a second axis of the second receptacle is disposed at a second offset distance away from the central axis of the cylinder head, the second axis of the second receptacle is angled at a second angle relative to the central axis of the cylinder head, the second receptacle comprises a second frustoconical receptacle portion, the first and second axes are angled inwardly toward one another from the second side toward the first side of the cylinder head, the cylinder head comprises a coolant passage extending circumferentially around the central axis and the dome-shaped volume, and the dome-shaped volume extends across the first axis, the second axis, and the central axis.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the cylinder head comprises a fuel inlet disposed along the central axis of the cylinder head.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cylinder head comprises a fuel inlet disposed along the central axis of the cylinder head.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cylinder head comprises a cylindrical-shaped body having a cylindrical outer wall and a plurality of fastener receptacles disposed about the central axis of the cylinder head.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of fastener receptacles are arranged in a circular pattern about an outer portion of the cylindrical-shaped body of the cylinder head.

21. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first receptacle comprises a first frustoconical receptacle portion, the first pre-combustion chamber comprises a first frustoconical body portion, and the first frustoconical body portion extends within and overlaps with the first frustoconical receptacle portion.

22. The system of claim 1 , comprising the engine having the cylinder head and the first pre-combustion chamber.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the engine comprises a two-stroke engine.

24. A system, comprising:

a cylinder head having a first side with a mounting interface configured to removably couple to a cylinder of an engine, wherein the cylinder head comprises:

a first receptacle in a second side, wherein a first axis of the first receptacle is disposed at a first offset distance away from a central axis of the cylinder head, and the first axis of the first receptacle is angled at a first angle relative to the central axis of the cylinder head;

a second receptacle in the second side, wherein a second axis of the second receptacle is disposed at a second offset distance away from the central axis of the cylinder head, the second axis of the second receptacle is angled at a second angle relative to the central axis of the cylinder head, and the first and second axes are angled inwardly toward one another from the second side toward the first side of the cylinder head; and

a dome-shaped volume recessed into the first side of the cylinder head, wherein the dome-shaped volume extends across the central axis of the cylinder head, the first and second receptacles intersect with an inwardly curved surface within the dome-shaped volume, the inwardly curved surface is symmetric relative to the central axis, and a depth of the dome-shaped volume increases toward the central axis.

25. The system of claim 24 , wherein the cylinder head comprises a cylindrical outer wall disposed about the central axis, wherein the cylinder head is configured to position the dome-shaped volume over the cylinder of the engine, a plurality of fastener receptacles are spaced apart from one another about the central axis of the cylinder head, and the plurality of fastener receptacles extend through the cylinder head to the mounting interface.

26. The system of claim 24 , comprising a first pre-combustion chamber removably coupled to the first receptacle.

27. The system of claim 26 , comprising a second pre-combustion chamber removably coupled to the second receptacle.

28. The system of claim 24 , wherein the first and second axes are substantially perpendicular to the inwardly curved surface.

29. A system, comprising:

a cylinder head having a first side with a mounting interface configured to removably couple to a cylinder of an engine, wherein the cylinder head comprises:

first and second receptacles in a second side;

a first axis of the first receptacle is disposed at a first offset distance away from a central axis of the cylinder head, wherein the first axis of the first receptacle is angled at a first angle relative to the central axis of the cylinder head;

a second axis of the second receptacle is disposed at a second offset distance away from the central axis of the cylinder head, wherein the second axis of the second receptacle is angled at a second angle relative to the central axis of the cylinder head, and the first and second axes are angled inwardly toward one another from the second side toward the first side of the cylinder head; and

a dome-shaped volume recessed into the first side of the cylinder head, wherein the first and second receptacles intersect with an inwardly curved surface within the dome-shaped volume, and a depth of the dome-shaped volume increases toward the central axis; and

a first pre-combustion chamber removably coupled to the first receptacle.

30. The system of claim 29 , comprising a second pre-combustion chamber removably coupled to the second receptacle.

31. The system of claim 29 , wherein the dome-shaped volume is defined by an annular interior surface extending circumferentially about the central axis and the inwardly curved surface that curves inwardly from the annular interior surface toward the central axis.

32. The system of claim 29 , wherein the cylinder head comprises a cylindrical outer wall disposed about the central axis, wherein the cylinder head is configured to position the dome-shaped volume over the cylinder of the engine, a plurality of fastener receptacles are spaced apart from one another about the central axis of the cylinder head, and the plurality of fastener receptacles extend through the cylinder head to the mounting interface.

33. The system of claim 29 , wherein the first and second axes are substantially perpendicular to the inwardly curved surface.

34. The system of claim 29 , wherein the inwardly curved surface is symmetric relative to the central axis.
