Abstract

A man-made vitreous fiber (MMVF) plant growth substrate is provided together with an irrigation strategy for providing water to the substrate. The substrate comprises a slab having a volume of 3 to 20 liters on which a single block containing one or more plants is disposed. In the context of this substrate, it is found that an irrigation strategy can be used which comprises a first period during which the desired water content in the slab is reduced to a minimum level before increasing and a second period during which the desired water content is maintained at a substantially constant level, wherein the difference between the minimum level and the constant level expressed as a percentage of the water content required to saturate the plant growth substrate is less than or equal to 25%. This provides excellent control over the balance between vegetative and generative growth in the plant.

Claims (24)

1. A plant growth method, comprising:

providing a plant growth substrate comprising a man-made vitreous fibres (MMVF) slab having a volume in the range 3 to 20 litres and a single MMVF block that contains one or more plants and is located on top of a first surface of the MMVF slab;

providing the plant growth substrate with water during growth of the one or more plants according to an irrigation strategy which defines a desired water content in the slab,

executing the irrigation strategy by:

reducing the desired water content in the slab to a minimum level during a first period; and then

increasing the desired water content in the slab to a substantially constant level and maintaining the substantially constant level during a second period,

wherein a difference between the minimum level and the constant level expressed as a percentage of a water content required to saturate the plant growth substrate is less than or equal to 25%.

2. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising defining the irrigation strategy to include a third period during which the desired water content is reduced.

3. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising expressing the difference between the minimum level and the constant level as a percentage of the water content required to saturate the plant growth substrate, the percentage being less than or equal to 20%.

4. A method according to claim 3 , further comprising expressing the difference between the minimum level and the constant level as a percentage of the water content required to saturate the plant growth substrate, the percentage being in the range of 10% to 15%.

5. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising expressing the minimum level as a percentage of the water content required to saturate the plant growth substrate, the percentage being at least 50%.

6. A method according to claim 5 , further comprising expressing the minimum level as a percentage of the water content required to saturate the plant growth substrate, the percentage being at least 60%.

7. A method according to claim 6 , further comprising expressing the constant level as a percentage of the water content required to saturate the plant growth substrate, the percentage being 75% or less.

8. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising reducing the desired water content to the minimum level within 7 weeks of commencement of the irrigation strategy.

9. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising causing the desired water content to reach the substantially constant level within 12 weeks of commencement of the irrigation strategy.

10. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of providing nutrients to the plant growth substrate.

11. A method according to claim 10 , wherein the step of providing nutrients to the plant growth substrate is carried out in dependence on monitored nutrient level within the plant growth substrate.

12. A method according to claim 10 , wherein prior to the step of providing nutrients to the plant growth substrate, the method includes monitoring a nutrient level in the plant growth substrate.

13. A method according to claim 12 , wherein the step of monitoring the nutrient level comprises monitoring electrical conductivity of a fluid within or drained from the MMVF slab.

14. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of providing a plant growth substrate further comprises providing a MMVF slab comprising a hydrophilic binder system.

15. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of providing a plant growth substrate further comprises providing a MMVF slab comprising a binder system comprising an organic binder selected from formaldehyde-free binders.

16. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of providing a plant growth substrate further comprises providing a MMVF slab comprising a first layer of MMVF in interfacial contact with a second layer of MMVF, the first layer having a greater density than the second layer.

17. A method according to claim 16 , further comprising providing the first layer of MMVF with a density in the range 40 to 90 kg/m 3 and the second layer of MMVF with a density in the range 35 to 85 kg/m 3 .

18. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the MMVF slab has a volume in the range 3 to 11 litres.
