Abstract

Butadiene, isoprene, and terpene based materials are soluble in polymer matrices such as polyethylene terephthalate when the butadiene, isoprene, or terpene compound also contains allylic carbons afterwith at least one polar moiety which is non-reactive to the matrix polymer. These compounds can be oxygen scavengers when in the presence of cobalt or manganese compounds and have been found to have substantially reduced haze in the final package.

Claims (24)

1 - 11 . (canceled)

12 . A composition comprising:

a first compound which is a matrix polymer selected from the group consisting of polyesters and nylons,

a second compound which is an oxidation catalyst, and

a third compound which is a copolymer or oligomer comprising at least one comonomer containing allylic carbons and at least one polar “non-reactive” moiety.

13 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the oxidation catalyst is selected from the group consisting of cobalt compounds, manganese compounds, N-hydroxy phthalimide and other molecules containing an N-hydroxy cyclic imide and their derivatives and combinations thereof.

14 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the third compound is selected from the group consisting of isoprenes, butadienes, terpenes and styrenes.

15 . The composition according to claim 13 , wherein the third compound is selected from the group consisting of isoprenes, butadienes, terpenes and styrenes.

16 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the polar group of the polar non-reactive moiety is selected from the group consisting of amides, imides, nitriles, sulfonates, sulfonamides and structures containing aromatic groups.

17 . The composition according to claim 15 , wherein the polar group of the polar non-reactive moiety is selected from the group consisting of amides, imides, nitriles, sulfonates, sulfonamides and structures containing aromatic groups.

18 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the matrix polymer is a polyester selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate and copolymers of polyethylene terephthalate.

19 . The composition according to claim 17 , wherein the matrix polymer is a polyester selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate and copolymers of polyethylene terephthalate.

20 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the matrix polymer is a crystallizable polyester.

21 . The composition according to claim 19 , wherein the matrix polymer is a crystallizable polyester.

22 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the third compound comprises the reaction product of at least two compounds, the first compound being selected from the group consisting of sytrenestyrene, butadiene, isoprene, terpene co-monomers and terpene oligomers and the second compound is maleic anhydride.

23 . The composition according to claim 21 , wherein third compound comprises the reaction product of at least two compounds, the first compound being selected from the group consisting of sytrenestyrene, butadiene, isoprene, terpene co-monomers and terpene oligomers and the second compound is maleic anhydride.

24 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the non-reactive polar moiety is derived from p-aminobenzamide.

25 . The composition according to claim 23 , wherein the non-reactive polar moiety is derived from p-aminobenzamide.

26 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the third compound comprises units of styrene.

27 . The composition according to claim 25 , wherein the third compound comprises units of styrene.

28 . The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the nylon is MXD6.

29 . The composition according to claim 27 , wherein the nylon is MXD6.

30 . A preform comprising the composition of claim 12 .

31 . A preform comprising the composition of claim 29 .
