Enhanced high torque device
View Patent ↗A torque-limiting device is disclosed, which may include a shaft extending axially through upper and lower shanks and a spring to connect to a nut. The upper and lower shanks may be under a force from the spring and further configured to selectively engage within a predetermined torque limit and disengage at above the predetermined torque limit. Accordingly, the shaft may receive torque up to the predetermined limit as provided by a user operating a handle of the torque-limiting device. The torque-limiting device may be disposable, reusable, economical, and have high torque capabilities.
1. A torque-limiting driver comprising:
a body ( 6 ) having a handle ( 4 );
an upper cylindrical shank ( 800 );
a lower cylindrical shank ( 700 ) having a drive socket ( 9 );
a ribbed nut ( 27 );
a spring ( 22 ) with an outer and an inner diameter between the upper cylindrical shank and the ribbed nut, wherein the spring is configured to apply a force across the upper cylindrical shank and the lower cylindrical shank;
a shaft ( 14 ) having a workpiece-engaging tip ( 12 ) and a drive connection ( 16 ) engaged within the drive socket of the lower cylindrical shank, the shaft extending axially through the lower cylindrical shank, the upper cylindrical shank, and the spring and connected to the ribbed nut;
wherein the upper cylindrical shank and the lower cylindrical shank engage for relative rotation, and wherein the upper cylindrical shank and the lower cylindrical shank disengage when a predetermined torque limit is exceeded.
2. The torque-limiting driver of claim 1 , wherein the drive socket is a square drive socket and the drive connection is a square drive connection.
3. The torque-limiting driver of claim 2 , wherein the predetermined torque limit is between about 70 inch-pounds and about 120 inch-pounds.
4. The torque-limiting driver of claim 1 , wherein the shaft includes a threading that is threaded onto the ribbed nut.
5. The torque-limiting driver of claim 1 , wherein said ribs are malleable and deform to accommodate insertion of said threading.
6. The torque-limiting driver of claim 5 , further comprising:
a neck and a shoulder integral to the ribbed nut of a diameter larger than said spring's inner diameter; and,
a neck extending below said shoulder of a diameter smaller than said spring's inner diameter.
7. The torque-limiting driver of claim 6 , wherein a force provided by the spring securely maintains the drive connection of the shaft engaged within the drive socket of the lower cylindrical shank.
8. The torque-limiting driver of claim 6 , wherein the predetermined torque limit is between about 70 inch-pounds and about 120 inch-pounds.
9. The torque-limiting driver of claim 6 , wherein the predetermined torque limit is between about 70 inch-pounds and about 150 inch-pounds.
10. The torque-limiting driver of claim 1 , wherein the ribbed nut includes a lower shoulder portion having an outer diameter substantially equal to an outer diameter of the spring and a lower neck extending axially through at least a portion of the spring.
11. The torque-limiting driver of claim 10 , wherein the predetermined torque limit is between about 70 inch-pounds and about 120 inch-pounds.
12. The torque-limiting driver of claim 6 or 10 , further comprising at least two washers between the spring and the upper cylindrical shank.
13. The torque-limiting driver of claim 1 , further comprising a washer between the lower cylindrical shank and the body.
14. The torque-limiting driver of claim 1 or 6 further comprising a washer between the spring and the ribbed nut.
15. The torque-limiting driver of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined torque limit is between about 70 inch-pounds and about 120 inch-pounds.
