Abstract

Proposed is an illumination device ( 100 ), comprising a light source ( 110 ) such as an LED or a laser diode, a wavelength conversion medium ( 120 ) such as a phosphor, and a periodic antenna array ( 300 ) made of a highly polarisable material such as a metal. The light source emits primary wavelength light that at least partially is converted in secondary wavelength light by the wavelength conversion medium. The periodic antenna array is positioned in close proximity to the wavelength conversion medium and functions to enhance the efficiency of the absorption and/or emission processes in the wavelength conversion medium through the coupling of the incident primary wavelength light or the emitted secondary light to surface lattice resonances that arise from the diffractive coupling of localized surface plasmon polaritons in the individual antennas of the array. This is especially advantageous for forming low étendue illumination device suitable for use in projection systems, or for controlling the directionality, the polarization, and/or the color of the secondary wavelength light.

Claims (24)

1. An illumination device, designed to provide an illumination distribution, comprising:

a light source arranged to emit a first light at a first wavelength,

a wavelength conversion medium arranged to convert at least part of the first wavelength light into a second light at a second wavelength, the wavelength conversion medium being formed into a slab; and

a periodic antenna array comprising a plurality of antennas disposed proximate the wavelength conversion medium, wherein the periodic antenna array supports surface lattice resonances arising from diffractive coupling of localized surface plasmon resonances in at least one of the antennas.

2. An illumination device according to claim 1 , wherein the periodic antenna array supports surface lattice resonances at least at one of the first wavelength and the second wavelength.

3. An illumination device according to claim 1 , wherein a periodicity of the periodic antenna array is of the order of the first wavelength or second wavelength.

4. An illumination device according to claim 1 ,

wherein the wavelength conversion medium forms a plane with an optical axis orthogonal to the plane,

wherein the periodicity of the periodic antenna array is arranged such that the second light is emitted within a predefined solid angle Ωat a predefined angle α relative to the optical axis.

5. An illumination device according to claim 1 , wherein the periodic antenna array is embedded between a substrate having a first index of refraction and the wavelength conversion medium having a second index of refraction, wherein the difference between the first refractive index and the second refractive index is smaller than 0.5.

7. An illumination device according to claim 1 , wherein the periodic antenna array comprises a first sub-array of a plurality of first antennas and a second sub-array of a plurality of second antennas, wherein the first and second sub-arrays are interwoven.

8. An illumination device according to claim 7 , wherein the first antennas and second antennas have a shape chosen from the group consisting of circular, elliptical, polygonal, and substantially polygonal shapes.

9. An illumination device according to claim 7 , wherein the first sub-array and second sub-array are chosen from the group consisting of a square array, a rectangular array, a triangular array, a hexagonal array, and a quasi-crystal array.

10. An illumination device according to claim 7 ,

wherein the second light comprises a first emission wavelength range and a second emission wavelength range,

wherein the wavelength conversion medium comprises a first phosphor having the first emission wavelength range, and a second phosphor having the second emission wavelength range,
