Abstract

A system, method and computer program product for generating an image set for a photographic scene. The method comprises sampling evaluation images comprising an ambient evaluation image and a strobe evaluation image, enumerating exposure requirements for each image comprising the image set, selecting exposure coordinates for each image comprising the image set based on a corresponding exposure requirement and a corresponding evaluation image, generating camera subsystem exposure parameters for each image comprising the image set based on corresponding selected exposure coordinates, storing camera subsystem exposure parameters for each image comprising the image set, sampling each image comprising the image set based on corresponding camera subsystem exposure parameters, and storing each sampled image comprising the image set. Techniques disclosed herein advantageously reduce inter-frame time for images sampled sequentially, and in particular image sets that include both ambient and strobe images.

Claims (44)

1. A method for generating an image set for a photographic scene, comprising:

sampling evaluation images comprising an ambient evaluation image and a strobe evaluation image;

enumerating exposure requirements for each image comprising the image set;

selecting exposure coordinates for each image comprising the image set based on a corresponding exposure requirement and a corresponding evaluation image;

generating camera subsystem exposure parameters for each image comprising the image set based on corresponding selected exposure coordinates;

storing camera subsystem exposure parameters for each image comprising the image set;

sampling each image comprising the image set based on corresponding camera subsystem exposure parameters; and

storing each sampled image comprising the image set.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting exposure coordinates comprises searching an evaluation image for a coordinate that satisfies a corresponding exposure requirement.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the corresponding exposure requirement comprises a histogram median of pixel intensity values representative of the ambient evaluation image.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the corresponding exposure requirement comprises an exposure target defined by a user selected coordinate and a requirement to illuminate a scene with strobe illumination.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating camera subsystem exposure parameters comprises determining exposure time and exposure sensitivity for the selected exposure coordinates.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein storing camera subsystem exposure parameters comprises adding subsystem exposure parameters to a data structure entry for a corresponding image within the image set.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the image set comprises one ambient image and one strobe image.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the image set comprises two ambient images and one strobe image.

9. A computer program product embodied in a non-transitory computer-readable medium that, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to generate an image set for a photographic scene by performing the steps of:

sampling evaluation images comprising an ambient evaluation image and a strobe evaluation image;

enumerating exposure requirements for each image comprising the image set;

selecting exposure coordinates for each image comprising the image set based on a corresponding exposure requirement and a corresponding evaluation image;

generating camera subsystem exposure parameters for each image comprising the image set based on corresponding selected exposure coordinates;

storing camera subsystem exposure parameters for each image comprising the image set;

sampling each image comprising the image set based on corresponding camera subsystem exposure parameters; and

storing each sampled image comprising the image set.

10. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein selecting exposure coordinates comprises searching an evaluation image for a coordinate that satisfies a corresponding exposure requirement.

11. The computer program product of claim 10 , wherein the corresponding exposure requirement comprises a histogram median of pixel intensity values representative of the ambient evaluation image.

12. The computer program product of claim 10 , wherein the corresponding exposure requirement comprises an exposure target defined by a user selected coordinate and a requirement to illuminate a scene with strobe illumination.

13. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein generating camera subsystem exposure parameters comprises determining exposure time and exposure sensitivity for the selected exposure coordinates.

14. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein storing camera subsystem exposure parameters comprises adding subsystem exposure parameters to a data structure entry for a corresponding image within the image set.

15. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the image set comprises one ambient image and one strobe image.

16. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the image set comprises two ambient images and one strobe image.

17. A photographic system, comprising:

A camera module, configured to sample a photographic scene according to exposure parameters;

A strobe unit, configured to generate strobe illumination within the photographic scene;

A processing unit, configured to generate an image set by performing the steps of:

sampling evaluation images comprising an ambient evaluation image and a strobe evaluation image;

enumerating exposure requirements for each image comprising the image set;

selecting exposure coordinates for each image comprising the image set based on a corresponding exposure requirement and a corresponding evaluation image;

generating camera subsystem exposure parameters for each image comprising the image set based on corresponding selected exposure coordinates;

storing camera subsystem exposure parameters for each image comprising the image set;

sampling each image comprising the image set based on corresponding camera subsystem exposure parameters; and

storing each sampled image comprising the image set.

18. The photographic system of claim 17 , wherein selecting exposure coordinates comprises searching an evaluation image for a coordinate that satisfies a corresponding exposure requirement.
