Abstract

A heli-hoist pad ( 18 ) that is incorporated into a wind turbine nacelle ( 12 ) in a manner that is optimized for helicopter approach and positioning of the heli-hoist pad ( 18 ), such as by being located within a recess ( 20 ) in an upper surface ( 28 ) of the wind turbine nacelle ( 12 ). Heat exchangers ( 50 ) may also be positioned within the free flow of wind outside of a nacelle ( 12 ) in manners that provide for serviceability while also allowing for optimal positioning of a heli-hoist pad ( 18 ).

Claims (15)

1. A nacelle construction of a wind turbine, comprising:

a nacelle supported by the tower, the nacelle rotatably supporting a rotor of the wind turbine and housing at least one drivetrain component, the nacelle having an upper surface; and

a heli-hoist pad including a platform and railing about at least a portion of the periphery of the platform;

a recess in a first portion of the upper surface of the nacelle that receives at least a portion of the platform such that the platform lies below a second portion of the upper surface of the nacelle that is outside of the recess.

2. The nacelle construction of claim 1 , wherein the recess is defined at least in part by a transition between the first portion and the second portion, the transition including a depth, at least at some points, of 1 meter or greater between the first portion of the upper surface and the second portion of the upper surface.

3. The nacelle construction of claim 2 , wherein the transition extends about at least portions of three sides of the platform so that at least portions of three sides of the platform lie within the recess.

4. The nacelle construction of claim 2 , wherein the platform extends across a downwind end of the nacelle.

5. The nacelle construction of claim 1 , wherein the platform is substantially level.

6. The nacelle construction of claim 1 , wherein the upper surface of the nacelle includes a service doorway that, when opened, provides access to an interior of the nacelle from above the nacelle.

7. The nacelle construction of claim 6 , wherein the doorway is positioned upwind of the heli-hoist pad.

8. The nacelle construction of claim 6 , further comprising:

a nacelle based crane, operable by service personnel from the platform when the service door is open.

9. The nacelle construction of claim 8 , wherein the nacelle based service crane is adapted to move components from between the platform and the interior of the nacelle when the service door is open.

10. The nacelle construction of claim 8 , further comprising:

one or more heat-exchangers positioned externally of the nacelle, wherein the service crane is adapted to access the one or more heat-exchangers for service.
