Abstract

A method of launching and retrieving a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) ( 10 ). The preferred method of launch involves carrying the UAV ( 10 ) up to altitude using a parasail ( 8 ) similar to that used to carry tourists aloft. The UAV is dropped and picks up enough airspeed in the dive to perform a pull-up into level controlled flight. The preferred method of recovery is for the UAV to fly into and latch onto the parasail tow line ( 4 ) or cables hanging off the tow line and then be winched back down to the boat ( 2 ).

Claims (29)

1. A method of recovering an aircraft, said method comprising

flying said aircraft in wing-borne flight into contact with an arrestment line;

the arrestment line being more nearly vertical than horizontal, the arrestment line being supported by support structure, the support structure being supported by the earth or by a boat or ship,

said aircraft having a capturing device for capturing said arrestment line, said capturing device comprising a hook portion positioned laterally of a longitudinal axis of said aircraft, said hook portion being adapted to secure said arrestment line to said aircraft during recovery and enable release thereof, said aircraft containing structure suitable for deflecting said line laterally into engagement with said hook, said suitable structure comprising a leading edge of a wing of said aircraft,

mechanically securing said arrestment line with said hook part during recovery; and

thereafter releasing said arrestment line from said hook;

said method further comprising reducing vertical motion of the arrestment line relative to said aircraft following contact between said aircraft and said line.

The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 1 , wherein reducing the vertical motion of said arrestment line following contact between said aircraft and said line comprises flying the aircraft in a climbing or descending flight path so as to align the flight path of the aircraft at an approximately right angle to the arrestment line at the point of impact.

The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 1 , wherein reducing the vertical motion of said arrestment line following contact between said aircraft and said line comprises flying the aircraft in a flight path that, at contact with the arrestment line, is within fifteen degrees of perpendicular to a plane described by points at the top and bottom of the arrestment line, said top and bottom points being spaced laterally relative to each other.

4. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 1 wherein reducing the vertical motion of said arrestment line following contact between said aircraft and said line comprises placing balanced shock absorbing mechanisms above and below the point of capture of said aircraft.

5. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 4 wherein said structure suitable for deflecting said line laterally is swept at least fifteen degrees from an inboard point on the wing to an outboard point on the wing.

6. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 1 wherein-said structure suitable for deflecting said line laterally is swept at least fifteen degrees at a point laterally closer to the aircraft centerline than the aircraft wingtip.

The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 6 wherein said hook portion includes a component that extends laterally outboard relative to the aircraft then forward relative to the aircraft and then extends laterally inboard relative to the aircraft to form an inboard facing mouth of a passageway.

8. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 7 wherein said capturing device contains two obstructions that said line must pass before entering an inner throat of said capturing device.

9. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 8 wherein a first said obstruction comprises a spring loaded latch.

10. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 7 wherein said capturing device has an inner throat narrower than the line.

11. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 1 wherein a sensor is located on said arrestment line support structure and is located more vertically above than horizontally to the side of the point of engagement between said aircraft and said arrestment line.

12. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 1 wherein a sensor is located on said arrestment line support structure.

13. A method of recovering an aircraft, said method comprising providing an arrestment line;

providing said aircraft with a capturing device for capturing said arrestment line, said capturing device comprising a hook positioned laterally of a longitudinal axis of said aircraft, said hook being adapted to releasably secure said line to said aircraft, said aircraft containing structure suitable for deflecting said line laterally into engagement with said hook, said structure comprising a wing of said aircraft,

said method further comprising reducing the vertical motion of the arrestment line relative to said aircraft during arrestment, wherein reducing the vertical motion of said arrestment line during arrestment comprises placing balanced shock absorbing mechanisms above and below the point of capture of said aircraft.

14. A method of recovering an aircraft, said method comprising

flying said aircraft in wing-borne flight into contact with an arrestment line,

the arrestment line being more nearly vertical than horizontal, the arrestment line being supported by a support structure, the support structure being supported by the earth or by a boat or ship,

said aircraft having a capturing device for capturing said arrestment line, said capturing device comprising a hook portion positioned laterally of a longitudinal axis of said aircraft, said hook portion being adapted to secure said line to said aircraft during recovery and enable release thereof,

said aircraft containing structure suitable for deflecting said line laterally into engagement with said hook, said suitable structure comprising a leading edge of a wing of said aircraft, the capture device and structure being configured to cooperate to deflect the arrestment line laterally into engagement with the hook portion; and

reducing the vertical motion of the arrestment line relative to said aircraft following contact between said aircraft with said line.

15. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 14 wherein reducing the vertical motion of said arrestment line during comprises placing balanced shock absorbing mechanisms above and below the point of capture of said aircraft.

16. The method of recovering an aircraft of claim 14 wherein said capturing device contains two obstructions that said line must pass before entering an inner throat of said capturing device.
