Abstract

Described are computer-based methods and apparatuses, including computer program products, for voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone authentication. In some examples, the method includes receiving an authentication request from a computing device; authenticating the computing device for access to a network based on the authentication request; determining if a VoIP endpoint device is associated with a network address associated with the authentication request; and authenticating the VoIP endpoint device if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address.

Claims (57)

1. A voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone authentication method, the method comprising:

receiving an authentication request from a computing device connected to a VoIP endpoint device, wherein the authentication request is relayed via the VoIP endpoint device;

authenticating the computing device for access to a network based on the authentication request;

determining a network address associated with the authentication request;

comparing the network address associated with the authentication request and a network address of the VoIP endpoint device;

determining that the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address associated with the authentication request based on the comparison of the network address associated with the authentication request and the network address of the VoIP endpoint device; and

authenticating the VoIP endpoint device if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address associated with the authentication request,

wherein the network address associated with the authentication request comprises at least one of a medium access control (MAC) address, an internet protocol address, a physical layer address, or a transport layer address.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising denying network access to the VoIP endpoint device based on de-authentication of the associated computing device.

3. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

terminating authentication of the VoIP endpoint device based on a timeout parameter;

determining if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address associated with an authenticated computing device; and

re-authenticating the VoIP endpoint device based on the determination if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the authenticated computing device.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the timeout parameter is at least one of a predetermined timeout parameter, a dynamically generated timeout parameter, or an operating time period for the VoIP endpoint device.

5. The method of claim 1 , comprising relaying communication between the computing device and one or more application servers, via the VoIP endpoint device, based on the authentication of the computing device.

6. A voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone authentication system, the system comprising:

a computing device configured to transmit an authentication request to an authentication server, the authentication request is relayed via a VoIP endpoint device, the computing device is associated with the VoIP endpoint device;

the authentication server configured to:

receive the authentication request from the computing device via the VoIP endpoint device,

authenticate the computing device based on the authentication request,

generate an access token for the computing device based on the authentication of the computing device, and

transmit the access token to a network access system; and

the network access system configured to:

receive the access token from the authentication server,

provide network access to the computing device via the network access system based on the access token,

determine if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with a network address of the computing device, and

provide network access to the VoIP endpoint device if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address of the computing device,

wherein the network address of the computing device comprises at least one of a medium access control (MAC) address, an internet protocol address, a physical layer address, or a transport layer address.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the network access system is further configured to deny network access to the VoIP endpoint device based on de-authentication of the associated computing device.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the authentication server is further configured to:

terminate network access of the VoIP endpoint device based on a timeout parameter;

determine if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with a network address of an authenticated computing device; and

provide network access to the VoIP endpoint device based on the determination if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address of the authenticated computing device.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the timeout parameter is at least one of a predetermined timeout parameter, a dynamically generated timeout parameter, or an operating time period for the VoIP endpoint device.

10. The system of claim 6 , wherein the network access system is further configured to relay communication between the computing device and one or more application servers based on the authentication of the computing device.

11. The system of claim 6 , wherein the network access system is further configured to relay communication between the VoIP endpoint device and a VoIP system if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address of the computing device.

12. A voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone authentication method, the method comprising:

receiving an authentication request from a computing device;

authenticating the computing device for access to a network based on the authentication request;

determining if a VoIP endpoint device is associated with a network address associated with the authentication request; and

authenticating the VoIP endpoint device if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address,

wherein the network address comprises at least one of a medium access control (MAC) address, an internet protocol address, a physical layer address, or a transport layer address.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the authentication request is relayed via the VoIP endpoint device.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the determining if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address further comprises:

determining the network address associated with the authentication request; and

comparing the network address and a network address of the VoIP endpoint device.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the determining if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address further comprises:

determining a network route associated with the authentication request;

determining a network route associated with the VoIP endpoint device; and

comparing the network route associated with the authentication request and the network route associated with the VoIP endpoint device.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising providing the computing device with access to one or more application servers based on the authentication of the computing device.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising providing the VoIP endpoint device with access to a VoIP system based on the authentication of the VoIP endpoint device.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

terminating authentication of the VoIP endpoint device based on a timeout parameter;

determining if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the network address associated with an authenticated computing device; and

re-authenticating the VoIP endpoint device based on the determination if the VoIP endpoint device is associated with the authenticated computing device.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the timeout parameter is at least one of a predetermined timeout parameter, a dynamically generated timeout parameter, or an operating time period for the VoIP endpoint device.
