Abstract

A storage management system receives at a computing system one or more search results from a search operation based on a search query. The search operation had performed a first search on content in a database accessible through an application, a second search on local to the computing system content, and a third search on Web content. At least one of the search results from the first search is associated with an application identifier identifying the application. The storage management system further ranks the search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search in aggregation. A search results integrator presents the ranked search results from the first, second, and third searches in an integrated view. The search results integrator further groups a subset of the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search into a subgroup within the integrated view.

Claims (42)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving at a computing system one or more search results from a search operation based on a search query, the search operation including performance of a first search on content in a datastore accessible through an application executable on the computing system and performance of a second search on content local to the computing system, at least one of the search results from the first search being associated with an application identifier identifying the application;

ranking the search results from the first search and the second search in aggregation; and

presenting the ranked search results from the first search and the second search in an integrated view.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the search operation further includes performance of a third search on content from one or more remote datastores, search results from the third search being ranked with the search results from the first search and the second search in aggregation.

3 . The method of claim 2 wherein the content on which the third search is performed includes one or more Web pages.

4 . The method of claim 2 wherein the presenting operation presenting the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search in an integrated view.

5 . The method of claim 2 further comprising:

grouping a subset of the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search into a subgroup within the integrated view.

6 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

grouping a subset of the ranked search results from multiple searches, including the first search and the second search, into a subgroup within the integrated view.

7 . The method of claim 6 wherein the grouping operation comprises:

identifying a subset of search results as being associated with a category; and

grouping the subset of the ranked search results from multiple searches, including the first search and the second search, into a subgroup within the integrated view.

8 . The method of claim 6 wherein the grouping operation comprises:

identifying a subset of search results as being associated with a predetermined entity, the entity representing a semantic data object having annotated properties; and

grouping the subset of the ranked search results from multiple searches, including the first search and the second search, into a subgroup within a curated presentation associated with the entity within the integrated view.

9 . The method of claim 1 wherein further comprising:

launching an application on the content associated with a selected search result presented in the integrated view, the application being unambiguously identified in associated with the selected search result.

10 . One or more tangible computer-readable storage media encoding computer-executable instructions for executing on a computer system a computer process, the computer process comprising:

receiving at a computing system one or more search results from a search operation based on a search query, the search operation including performance of a first search on content in a datastore accessible through an application executable on the computing system, performance of a second search on content local to the computing system, and performance of a third search on remote content, at least one of the search results from the first search being associated with an application identifier identifying the application;

ranking the search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search in aggregation; and

presenting the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search in an integrated view.

11 . The one or more computer readable media of claim 10 wherein the presenting operation comprises:

receiving presentation context parameters in association with at least one of the search results; and

presenting the at least one of the search results in the integrated view in accordance with the presentation context parameters.

12 . The one or more computer readable media of claim 10 wherein the content on which the third search is performed includes one or more Web pages.

13 . The one or more computer readable media of claim 10 wherein the computer process further comprises:

grouping a subset of the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search into a subgroup within the integrated view.

14 . The one or more computer readable media of claim 10 wherein the grouping operation comprises:

identifying a subset of search results as being associated with a category; and

grouping the subset of the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search into a subgroup within the integrated view.

15 . The one or more computer readable media of claim 10 wherein the grouping operation comprises:

identifying a subset of search results as being associated with a predetermined entity, the entity representing a semantic data object having annotated properties; and

grouping the subset of the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search into a subgroup within a curated presentation associated with the entity within the integrated view.

16 . A system comprising:

a search management system that receives at a computing system one or more search results from a search operation based on a search query, the search operation including performance of a first search on content in a datastore accessible through an application executable on the computing system, performance of a second search on content local to the computing system, and performance of a third search on remote content, at least one of the search results from the first search being associated with an application identifier identifying the application; and

a search result integrator communicatively coupled to the search management system that ranks the search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search in aggregation and presents the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search in an integrated view.

17 . The system of claim 16 wherein the content on which the third search is performed includes one or more Web pages.

18 . The system of claim 16 wherein the search management system further groups a subset of the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search into a subgroup within the integrated view.

19 . The system of claim 16 wherein the search management system further identifies a subset of search results as being associated with a category and groups the subset of the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search into a subgroup within the integrated view.

20 . The system of claim 16 wherein the search management system further identifies a subset of search results as being associated with a predetermined entity, the entity representing a semantic data object having annotated properties and groups the subset of the ranked search results from the first search, the second search, and the third search into a subgroup within a curated presentation associated with the entity within the integrated view.
