Abstract

Systems and methods for initiating presentation of media content prior to receiving seek index data associated with the media content. In particular, if necessary, the seek index data can be received after playback and/or presentation of the media content begins. Thus, delays associated with obtaining or otherwise processing seek index data can be reduced or postponed or in cases of adaptive streaming, higher quality presentation of the media content can be achieved.

Claims (33)

1. A server device, comprising:

a memory to store computer executable components; and

a computer-based processor to execute the following computer executable components stored in the memory:

a receiving component that receives from a client device a request to stream media content;

a selection component that selects a media content container associated with the media content, wherein the media content container comprises stream data that includes a media frame associated with the media content and seek index data that includes timing data associated with a presentation of the media frame;

a transmission component that transmits the stream data to the client device in response to the request; and

a condition component that determines that a condition is satisfied in connection with a transmission of the seek index data to the client device.

2. The server device of claim 1 , wherein the transmission component transmits the seek index data of the stream data to the client device in response to the condition being satisfied.

3. The server device of claim 1 , wherein the condition relates to an indication that the client device is presenting the media content associated with the stream data.

4. The server device of claim 1 , wherein the condition relates to an indication that the client device or a network associated with the client device has unused bandwidth capacity.

5. The server device of claim 1 , wherein the condition relates to an indication that the client device has unused computer-based processing capacity.

6. The server device of claim 1 , wherein the condition relates to an indication that the client device has received instructions relating to a seek operation associated with a presentation of the media content.

7. The server device of claim 1 , wherein the condition relates to an indication that the client device has received all portions of the stream data.

8. The server device of claim 1 , wherein the condition relates to an indication that the client device has received a defined subset of the stream data and a portion of the defined subset of the stream data is being presented at the client device.

9. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing computer-executable instructions that, in response to execution, cause a device including a processor to perform operations, comprising:

receiving a request to receive media content from a client device;

selecting a content container associated with the media content, wherein the content container comprises stream data that includes a media frame associated with the media content and seek index data that includes timing data associated with a presentation of the media frame;

transmitting, in response to the request, a first set of data to the client device, wherein the first set of data includes the stream data and excludes the seek index data; and

determining whether to transmit the seek index data to the client device.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the determining whether to transmit the seek index data is based on receiving an indication that the client device is presenting a representation of the stream data.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the determining whether to transmit the seek index data is based on receiving an indication that the client device or a network associated with the client device has spare bandwidth capacity.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the determining whether to transmit the seek index data is based on receiving an indication that the client device or a network associated with the client device has spare computer resource processing capacity.

13. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the determining whether to transmit the seek index data is based on receiving an indication that the client device received instructions relating to a seek operation associated with a presentation of the media content.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the determining whether to transmit the seek index data is based on receiving an indication that the client device has received all portions of the stream data.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the determining whether to transmit the seek index data is based on receiving an indication that the client device has received defined quantity of the stream data and a portion of the defined quantity is being presented at the client device.

16. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing computer-executable instructions that, in response to execution, cause a device including a processor to perform operations, comprising:

identifying a media content container associated with media content selected for presentation, the media content container comprising stream data including a playable frame of the media content and seek index data including timing information associated with playback of the playable frame;

receiving the stream data from a server device; and

beginning playback of the stream data prior to receiving the seek index data that pertains to the stream data being played.

17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising receiving the seek index data in response to a seek operation associated with the playback of the stream data.

18. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising receiving the seek index data in response to receiving all portions of the stream data included in the media content container.

19. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising receiving the seek index data in response to unused bandwidth capacity associated with the device or a network associated with the device.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising receiving the seek index data in response to unused processing capacity associated with the device.
