Abstract

A barrier, such as fence panel, is formed from a plurality of channel-shaped rails and plurality of upright members. Each upright member traverses the rail channels of the rails forming the barrier and is mechanically connected to the rail, such that the upright member is selectively tiltable with respect to the rail within an angular adjustment range. The mechanical connection between rail and upright member may be formed by a weld, such as a resistance weld, by a permanent adhesive, or with a fastener such as bolt or screw. A tab that extends from the rail web may be used to connect a rail to an upright member. The tab may depend from a bracket installed within the rail channel, or may be cut out and bent into the channel from the web. The tab is rotatable about an axis situated at or adjacent the web.

Claims (40)

1. A barrier comprising:

a plurality of identically sized steel rails disposed in spaced and parallel relationship, each rail comprising:

an elongate web;

a pair of spaced side walls that depend from the web and cooperate with the web to define a rail channel having a mouth situated opposite the web; and

a plurality of longitudinally spaced tabs, each tab tiltable relative to the web and extending within the rail channel from a position at or adjacent the web; and

a plurality of steel upright members, each upright member tiltable relative to the webs of the rails and extending in transverse relationship to the plural rails, with a weld formed between each upright member and each rail at a tab of that rail;

in which the mouths of the plurality of rails open in the same direction.

2. The barrier of claim 1 in which each tab is flat and imperforate.

3. The barrier of claim 1 in which a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings formed in the web of each of said rails, and in which each upright member extends through one of said openings in each of the said rails.

4. The barrier of claim 1 in which the web of the lower rail is characterized by a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings formed therein, in which each such opening clearingly receives one of said plurality of upright members, and in which the web of the upper rail is characterized by no opening of sufficient size to receive an upright member therethrough.

5. The barrier of claim 1 in which each tab is characterized by opposed faces bounded by one or more edges and in which no weld contacts any such edge.

6. The barrier of claim 1 in which each tab is characterized by a planar surface and each upright member is characterized by a lateral planar surface and in which the planar surfaces of each tab and its associated upright member are disposed in a parallel relationship that is maintained when the upright member is tilted relative to the rails.

7. The barrier of claim 6 in which each upright member is hollow and characterized by a planar lateral surface to which a tab of each rail is welded.

8. The barrier of claim 6 the opposed faces of each tab are bounded by one or more edges and in which no weld contacts any such edge.

9. The barrier of claim 8 in which each upright member is hollow and characterized by a planar lateral surface to which a tab of each rail is welded.

10. A kit, comprising:

a plurality of barriers as defined in claim 1 ; and

a plurality of posts, each post connectable to the end of at least one of said plurality of rails of one of said barriers.

11. The barrier of claim 1 , further comprising;

a spaced pair of first and second posts installed on a terrain;

and in which each rail is secured at its opposite ends to the first and second posts.

12. A barrier comprising:

a plurality of steel rails, including at least an upper and lower rail, the rails disposed in spaced and parallel relationship, each rail comprising:

an elongate web;

a pair of spaced side walls that depend from the web and cooperate with the web to define a rail channel; and

a plurality of longitudinally spaced tabs, each tab extending within the rail channel from a position at or adjacent the web; and

a plurality of steel upright members, each upright member extending in transverse relationship to the plural rails and tiltable relative to the webs thereof, each tab welded to a corresponding upright member;

in which each tab is characterized by a planar surface and each upright member is characterized by a lateral planar surface and in which the planar surfaces of each tab and its associated upright member are disposed in a parallel relationship that is maintained when the upright member is tilted relative to the rails.

13. The barrier of claim 12 in which each tab is flat and imperforate.

14. The barrier of claim 12 in which a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings formed in the web of each of said rails, and in which each upright member extends through one of said openings in each of the said rails.

15. The barrier of claim 12 in which the web of the lower rail is characterized by a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings formed therein, in which each such opening clearingly receives one of said plurality of upright members, and in which the web of the upper rail is characterized by no opening of sufficient size to receive an upright member therethrough.

16. The barrier of claim 12 in which each upright member is hollow, with a tab of each rail welded to its lateral planar surface.

17. The barrier of claim 12 in which each tab is characterized by opposed faces bounded by one or more edges and in which no weld contacts any such edge.

18. The barrier of claim 17 in which each upright member is hollow, with a tab of each rail welded to its lateral planar surface.

19. A kit, comprising:

a plurality of barriers as defined in claim 12 ; and

a plurality of posts, each post connectable to the end of at least one of said plurality of rails of one of said barriers.

20. The barrier of claim 12 , further comprising;

a spaced pair of first and second posts installed on a terrain;

and in which each rail is secured at its opposite ends to the first and second posts.
