Abstract

A method of designing a multifocal ophthalmic lens with one base focus and at least one additional focus, capable of reducing aberrations of the eye for at least one of the foci after its implantation, comprising the steps of: (i) characterizing at least one corneal surface as a mathematical model; (ii) calculating the resulting aberrations of said corneal surface(s) by employing said mathematical model; (iii) modelling the multifocal ophthalmic lens such that a wavefront arriving from an optical system comprising said lens and said at least one corneal surface obtains reduced aberrations for at least one of the foci. There is also disclosed a method of selecting a multifocal intraocular lens, a method of designing a multifocal ophthalmic lens based on corneal data from a group of patients, and a multifocal ophthalmic lens.

Claims (9)

1. A diffractive, multifocal intraocular lens for treatment of an eye of a patient comprising: a diffractive pattern and at least one non-spherical surface; the lens having one base focus comprising a far-field focus and at least one additional focus comprising at least one of a near-field focus and a mid-field focus; wherein the lens is configured to reduce, when implanted in the patient's eye, a chromatic aberration of the eye for the at least one additional focus; and wherein the at least one non-spherical surface is configured to alter, for at least one of the foci, a shape of a light wavefront passing through the lens;

the alteration to the wavefront being characterized by a change of at least one spherical wavefront aberration term of a polynomial expression describing the wavefront; in which the change in the at least one spherical wavefront aberration term offsets, at least partly, a mean value of that spherical wavefront aberration term based on corneal measurements of a selected group of people.

2. The diffractive, multifocal intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-spherical surface is configured to alter the shape of the light wavefront passing through the lens to offset, at least partly, a mean value of that spherical aberration term for a group of people having cataracts.

3. The diffractive, multifocal intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-spherical surface is configured to alter the shape of the light wavefront passing through the lens to partially offset the mean value of that spherical wavefront aberration term for the selected group of people.

4. The diffractive, multifocal intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the lens is a bifocal lens that is configured, when implanted in the patient's eye, to vary a light distribution between the base and additional focus of the lens as a pupil diameter of the patient's eye varies.

5. The diffractive, multifocal intraocular lens of claim 4 , wherein the diffractive pattern has a gradually reduced step height in a direction towards a periphery of the lens.

6. The diffractive, multifocal intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the lens includes a surface opposite to the at least one non-spherical surface that is configured to offset an additional wavefront aberration term associated with the light wavefront passing through the lens.

7. The diffractive, multifocal intraocular lens of claim 6 , wherein the additional wavefront aberration term relates to astigmatism.

8. The diffractive, multifocal intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-spherical surface is a modified conoid surface having a conical constant less than zero.
