Abstract

Methods and systems may include a motion sensor and logic to sample an output signal of the motion sensor. The logic can also be configured to track an amount of time the motion sensor is triggered based on the output signal, and transmit the amount of time over a wireless link on a periodic basis.

Claims (71)

1. A method for accurately tracking an amount of time a motion sensor is triggered, the method being implemented in a computer that includes one or more processors, the method comprising:

monitoring an output signal of the motion sensor, the output signal comprising information related to motion detected by the motion sensor;

tracking a first time period for which the motion sensor is triggered based on the output signal, the first time period indicative of an amount of time between a first time at which the output signal indicates a detection of motion and a second time at which the output signal indicates a lack of motion;

storing the first time period;

adding the first time period to a cumulative time period; and

transmitting the cumulative time period.

2. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising:

tracking a second time period for which the motion sensor is triggered based on the output signal, the second time period indicative of an amount of time between a third time at which the output signal indicates the detection of motion and a fourth time at which the output signal indicates the lack of motion;

adding the second time period to the cumulative time period; and

transmitting the cumulative time period.

3. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising:

transmitting the cumulative time period over a wireless link on a periodic basis.

4. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising:

determining, after the first time, whether the output signal indicates the lack of motion;

determining that the output signal indicates the lack of motion at the second time;

determining whether the output signal continues to indicate the lack of motion for a predetermined time period after the second time;

determining that the motion is no longer detected by the motion sensor at the second time based on determining that the output signal continues to indicate the lack of motion for the predetermined time period after the second time; and

storing the first time period based on determining that the motion is no longer detected by the motion sensor at the second time.

5. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising:

determining whether the output signal indicates the detection of motion or the lack of motion based on a voltage level associated with the output signal, wherein a first range of voltage levels indicate the detection of motion and a second range of voltage levels indicate the lack of motion;

determining that the output signal indicates the detection of motion when the voltage level associated with the output signal is within the first range; and

determining that the output signal indicates the lack of motion when the voltage level associated with the output signal is within the second range.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the motion sensor comprises a passive infrared sensor.

7. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising a set of stored instructions which, if executed by one or more processors, cause a computer to:

monitor an output signal of a motion sensor, the output signal comprising information related to motion detected by the motion sensor;

track a first time period for which the motion sensor is triggered based on the output signal, the first time period indicative of an amount of time between a first time at which the output signal indicates a detection of motion and a second time at which the output signal indicates a lack of motion;

store the first time period;

add the first time period to a cumulative time period; and

transmit the cumulative time period.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the set of stored instructions further cause the computer to:

track a second time period for which the motion sensor is triggered based on the output signal, the second time period indicative of an amount of time between a third time at which the output signal indicates the detection of motion and a fourth time at which the output signal indicates the lack of motion;

add the second time period to the cumulative time period; and

transmit the cumulative time period.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the set of stored instructions further cause the computer to:

transmit the cumulative time period over a wireless link on a periodic basis.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the set of stored instructions further cause the computer to:

determine, after the first time, whether the output signal indicates the lack of motion;

determine that the output signal indicates the lack of motion at the second time;

determine whether the output signal continues to indicate the lack of motion for a predetermined time period after the second time;

determine that the motion is no longer detected by the motion sensor at the second time based on determining that the output signal continues to indicate the lack of motion for the predetermined time period after the second time; and

store the first time period based on determining that the motion is no longer detected by the motion sensor at the second time.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the set of stored instructions further cause the computer to:

determine whether the output signal indicates the detection of motion or the lack of motion based on a voltage level associated with the output signal, wherein a first range of voltage levels indicate the detection of motion and a second range of voltage levels indicate the lack of motion;

determine that the output signal indicates the detection of motion when the voltage level associated with the output signal is within the first range; and

determine that the output signal indicates the lack of motion when the voltage level associated with the output signal is within the second range.

12. A system for accurately tracking an amount of time a motion sensor is triggered, the system comprising:

the motion sensor;

a memory; and

one or more processors configured to:

monitor an output signal of the motion sensor, the output signal comprising information related to motion detected by the motion sensor;

track a first time period for which the motion sensor is triggered based on the output signal, the first time period indicative of an amount of time between a first time at which the output signal indicates a detection of motion and a second time at which the output signal indicates a lack of motion;

store the first time period in the memory;

add the first time period to a cumulative time period; and

transmit the cumulative time period.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

track a second time period for which the motion sensor is triggered based on the output signal, the second time period indicative of an amount of time between a third time at which the output signal indicates the detection of motion and a fourth time at which the output signal indicates the lack of motion;

add the second time period to the cumulative time period; and

transmit the cumulative time period.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

transmit the cumulative time period over a wireless link on a periodic basis.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine, after the first time, whether the output signal indicates the lack of motion;

determine that the output signal indicates the lack of motion at the second time;

determine whether the output signal continues to indicate the lack of motion for a predetermined time period after the second time;

determine that the motion is no longer detected by the motion sensor at the second time based on determining that the output signal continues to indicate the lack of motion for the predetermined time period after the second time; and

store the first time period based on determining that the motion is no longer detected by the motion sensor at the second time.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine whether the output signal indicates the detection of motion or the lack of motion based on a voltage level associated with the output signal, wherein a first range of voltage levels indicate the detection of motion and a second range of voltage levels indicate the lack of motion;

determine that the output signal indicates the detection of motion when the voltage level associated with the output signal is within the first range; and

determine that the output signal indicates the lack of motion when the voltage level associated with the output signal is within the second range.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the motion sensors comprises a passive infrared sensor.
