Abstract

Example methods and systems for inserting information into content playing via a playback device are described. In some example embodiments, the methods and systems may identify a break type in content playing. The break type is either a bounded type (e.g., a break in a live broadcast) or an unbounded type (e.g., a podcast, audio book, song or the like stored on the playback device). Thereafter, select an information segment to present during the identified break is selected that is representative of information associated with the playback device, wherein the selected information segment is dependent upon the break type. Thereafter, the information segment is inserted into the content playing via the playback device upon an occurrence of the identified break type.

Claims (53)

1. A method, comprising:

identifying, at a playback device, by executing an instruction with a processor, real-time content by comparing a fingerprint of the real-time content to a plurality of reference fingerprints, the plurality of reference fingerprints corresponding to a plurality of different media;

identifying, at the playback device by executing an instruction with the processor, a break in the real-time content playing via the playback device based on the identification of the real-time content;

assigning, by executing an instruction with the processor, a ranking to multiple information segments, the ranking based on a priority associated with a timeliness of an information segment relative to other information segments;

selecting, by executing an instruction with the processor, an information segment to present during the break based on the assigned rankings; and

inserting, by executing an instruction with the processor, the information segment into the real-time content playing via the playback device upon an occurrence of the break by playing the information segment over the real-time content on the playback device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the information segment includes selecting an information segment representative of information received by a location determination component of the playback device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the information segment to present during the break includes:

determining a time window for the break; and

selecting one or more information segments to insert into the playing content based on the determined time window.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the information segment to present during the break includes:

identifying a type of playback device; and

selecting the information segment based on an association with the type of playback device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the break in the real-time content playing via the playback device is based on audio characteristics of the content playing.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

identifying the break in the real-time content playing via the playback device includes identifying an end of a song playing via a car stereo;

selecting the information segment includes obtaining navigation information from a global positioning device and obtaining a traffic report from a web-based resource based on the navigation information; and

inserting the information segment into the real-time content playing via the playback device includes inserting the traffic report into the real-time content playing via the playback device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the break in the real-time content playing via the playback device includes identifying an end of a song playing via a mobile device; and

wherein selecting the information segment to present during the break includes at least one of: (1) selecting a message provided by a messaging application supported by the mobile device; or (2) obtaining a news segment from a web-based resource.

8. The method of claim 1 , further including receiving a message including textual information provided by a messaging application supported by a mobile device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information segment is an audio version of textual information and a voice type for the audio version is selected based on a characteristic of the content.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the characteristic of the content includes at least one of an identity of an artist performing a song, a mood of a song, a volume level of the content, and a presence of a voice in a song.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ranking is further based on priorities associated with types of the multiple information segments.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the ranking is further based on importance values associated with the multiple information segments.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the ranking is further based on a preference included in a consumer profile.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the consumer profile includes a listening history associated with a consumer.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein inserting the information segment into the real-time content includes inserting at least one of an email, a news report, a fuel status, or a traffic report, the real time content including at least one of a song, a podcast, or a radio program.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the real-time content includes at least one of a song, a podcast, or a radio program.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the break in the real-time content includes determining a time period during which the real-time content does not match a preference of a consumer profile.

18. The method of claim 1 , further including determining, by executing an instruction with the processor, an end time of the real-time content and queueing, by executing an instruction with the processor, a second information segment to be inserted at the end time of the real-time content.

19. A playback device, comprising:

a content break module, implemented by one or more hardware processors, that is to:

identify, at the playback device, by executing an instruction with the processor, real-time content by comparing a fingerprint of the real-time content to a plurality of reference fingerprints, the plurality of reference fingerprints corresponding to a plurality of different media; and

identify, at the playback device, a break in the real-time content playing via the playback device based on the identification of the real-time content;

an information selection module to:

 assign a ranking to multiple information segments, the ranking based on a priority associated with a timeliness of an information segment relative to other information segments; and

 select an information segment to present during the break, wherein the information segment is selected based on the assigned rankings; and

an information insertion module that is to insert the information segment into the real-time content playing via the playback device upon an occurrence of the break by playing the information segment over the real-time content on the playback device.

20. The playback device of claim 19 , wherein the information selection module is to:

determine a time window for the break; and

select one or more information segments to insert into the real-time content based on the determined time window.

21. The playback device of claim 19 , wherein the information selection module is to:

identify a type of playback device; and

select the information segment to insert into the real-time content playing via the playback device based on an association with the type of playback device.

22. The playback device of claim 19 , further including a mobile device interface to communicate with a mobile device, wherein the playback device receives a message including textual information provided by a messaging application supported by the mobile device.

23. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a playback device, cause the playback device to at least:

identify real-time content by comparing a fingerprint of the real-time content to a plurality of reference fingerprints, the plurality of reference fingerprints corresponding to a plurality of different media;

identify, at the playback device, a break in the real-time content playing via the playback device based on the identification of the real-time content;

assign a ranking to multiple information segments, the ranking based on a priority associated with a timeliness of an information segment relative to other information segments;

select an information segment to present during the break, wherein the information segment is selected based on the assigned rankings; and

insert the information segment into the real-time content playing via the playback device upon an occurrence of the break by playing the information segment over the real-time content on the playback device.

24. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 23 , wherein the playback device is a car stereo system.
