Abstract

Techniques for dynamic disk personalization are provided. A virtual image that is used to create an instance of a virtual machine (VM) is altered so that disk access operations are intercepted within the VM and redirected to a service that is external to the VM. The external service manages a personalized storage for a principal, the personalized storage used to personalize the virtual image without altering the virtual image.

Claims (24)

1. A method, comprising:

intercepting, by a processor, a request for storage, the request for storage was made from within a virtual machine (VM) image and intercepted within the VM image by a dynamic filter that processes within the VM image;

remotely acquiring, by the processor, the storage outside the VM image; and

filtering, by the processor, the VM image using the storage to customizes the VM image as a specific VM instance.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising, enforcing, by the processor, a policy with respect to using the storage.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising, logging, by the processor, metrics including the request and an identifier for the VM instance.

4. The method of claim 3 further comprising, auditing, by the processor, the metrics for compliance with an enterprise policy.

5. The method of claim 3 further comprising, reporting, by the processor, on usage of the VM and VM instance to identify performance bottlenecks.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein remotely acquiring further includes obtaining the storage as executable instructions.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein remotely acquiring further includes acquiring a policy for usage with the executable instructions from the storage.

8. A method, comprising:

accessing, by a processor, a storage location for a resource, the storage location is external to a virtual machine (VM) that requested the resource and the storage location requested by a dynamic filter service executing within the VM; and

returning, by the processor, a reference for accessing the storage location, the reference returned within the VM.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein accessing further includes identifying a request that originates within the VM from a principal.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein identifying further includes recognizing the principal as an automated service operating within the VM.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein recognizing further includes receiving the request from the automated service during initiation of the VM on the processor.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein accessing further includes searching an index that is external to the VM to identify the storage location for the resource.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein returning further includes providing the reference as a link to the resource, the resource a set of executable instructions.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein providing the reference as the link to the resource further includes instructing the VM to execute the set of executable instructions to filter the VM and establish a specific VM instance.

15. A multiprocessor-implemented system, comprising:

a processor configured with a virtual machine (VM) filter implemented in a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium and to execute on the processor within a VM;

the VM filter intercepts storage requests originating within the VM and locates external resources that are external to the VM that satisfy the storage requests and the VM filter configured to provide references to the VM to the external resources to process the storage requests, and wherein the VM filter processes from within the VM.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the VM filter initiates when the VM initiates.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein each storage request customizes the VM into a particular VM instance that is specific to a particular principal.
