Abstract

A method for improving the tissue oxygenation of a subject by identifying diminished blood flow in a blood vessel and deploying a flow reducing implant in a blood vessel. The flow reducing implant comprises a hollow element adapted for placement in the blood vessel defining a flow passage therethrough, said flow passage comprising at least two sections, one with a larger diameter and one with a smaller diameter, wherein said smaller diameter is smaller than a cross section of the blood vessel.

Claims (15)

1. A method for improving tissue oxygenation in a subject, said method comprising:

identifying a first blood vessel segment having a diminished blood flow therein, the diminished blood flow causing poor oxygen delivery to a tissue;

identifying a second blood vessel segment that is anatomically positioned to receive blood flow from the first blood vessel segment;

deploying a tubular flow reducing implant in the second blood vessel segment, the tubular flow reducing implant comprising a narrowed portion and at least one flared portion following deployment, thereby improving oxygen delivery to the tissue and;

selectively narrowing the diameter of the narrowed portion following deployment of the tubular flow reducing implant, thereby further reducing blood flow through the implant, and further improving oxygen delivery to the tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first blood vessel segment comprises a segment of an artery and the second segment of a blood vessel comprises a segment of a vein.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first blood vessel segment and the second blood vessel segment each comprise a segment of an artery.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first blood vessel segment comprises an area of stenosis or an area of occlusion.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue is a diabetic lesion of a lower extremity of the subject.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue comprises a limb of the subject.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting a geometry of the flow reducing implant to match at least one characteristic of the second blood vessel segment.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the second blood vessel segment comprises one or more of a vessel segment length, a vessel segment diameter, and a vessel segment wall elasticity.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting a flow reducing implant in accordance with an amount of desired pressure increase in at least one of the first blood vessel segment and the second blood vessel segment.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising deploying the flow reducing implant with a flow valve coupled therewith.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selectively narrowing the flow reducing implant over time.
