Abstract

A method of implanting a revision glenoid component in one embodiment includes accessing a previously implanted glenoid component in a scapula, removing the previously implanted glenoid component, identifying an inferior glenoid circle center of the scapula, preparing a glenoid fossa of the scapula to receive a revision glenoid component, selecting a revision glenoid component, and implanting the selected revision glenoid component based upon the identified inferior glenoid circle center in the prepared glenoid fossa.

Claims (57)

1. A method of implanting a revision glenoid component, comprising:

accessing a previously implanted glenoid component in a scapula;

removing the previously implanted glenoid component;

identifying an inferior glenoid circle center of the scapula by

identifying a most inferior point of a glenoid rim,

identifying a most anterior point of the glenoid rim,

identifying a most posterior point of the glenoid rim,

establishing a best fit circle based upon the identified most inferior point, the identified most anterior point, and the identified most posterior point, and

identifying the center of the best fit circle as the inferior glenoid circle center;

selecting the revision glenoid component from a set of revision glenoid components;

preparing a glenoid fossa of the scapula to receive the selected revision glenoid component; and

implanting the selected revision glenoid component based upon the identified inferior glenoid circle center in the prepared glenoid fossa.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected revision glenoid component has a circular outer periphery.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

positioning a guide based upon the identified inferior glenoid circle center; and

guiding the selected revision glenoid component with the positioned guide.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein guiding the selected revision glenoid component comprises:

moving a base component along a guide pin positioned within a centrally located guide hole in the base component.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein positioning the guide comprises:

positioning the guide at a location posterior and superior to the identified inferior glenoid circle center.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein implanting the revision glenoid component comprises:

coupling an articulating component with the base component.

7. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

inserting a portion of a first fastener through the base component and into the scapula; and

inserting a portion of a second fastener through the base component and into the scapula.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

removing the guide pin after inserting the portion of the first fastener through the base component.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein preparing the glenoid fossa of the scapula to receive the revision glenoid component comprises:

forming a cavity in the glenoid fossa using a reamer, the cavity shaped complementary to, and larger than, a base portion of the revision glenoid component.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein implanting the selected revision glenoid component comprises:

implanting the selected revision glenoid component without press-fitting the selected revision glenoid component into the cavity.

11. A method of implanting a revision glenoid component, comprising:

obtaining an image of a scapula;

identifying an inferior glenoid circle center of the scapula based upon the image by

identifying a most inferior point of a glenoid rim,

identifying a most anterior point of the glenoid rim,

identifying a most posterior point of the glenoid rim,

establishing a best fit circle based upon the identified most inferior point, the identified most anterior point, and the identified most posterior point, and

identifying the center of the best fit circle as the inferior glenoid circle center;

selecting the revision glenoid component from a set of revision glenoid components;

removing a previously implanted glenoid component from the scapula;

preparing a glenoid fossa of the scapula to receive the selected revision glenoid component; and

implanting the selected revision glenoid component in the prepared glenoid fossa based upon the identified inferior glenoid circle center.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the selected revision glenoid component has a circular outer periphery.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

positioning a guide based upon the identified inferior glenoid circle center; and

guiding the selected revision glenoid component with the positioned guide.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein guiding the selected revision glenoid component comprises:

moving a base component along a guide pin positioned within a centrally located guide hole in the base component.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein positioning the guide comprises:

positioning the guide at a location posterior and superior to the identified inferior glenoid circle center.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein implanting the revision glenoid component comprises:

coupling an articulating component with the base component.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein preparing the glenoid fossa of the scapula to receive a prosthesis comprises:

finally forming a cavity in the glenoid fossa using a cannulated compactor, the finally formed cavity shaped complementary to, and larger than, a base portion of the first revision glenoid base component.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein implanting the selected revision glenoid component comprises:

implanting the selected revision glenoid component without press-fitting the selected revision glenoid component into the finally formed cavity.
