Abstract

Embodiments herein provide systems and methods of transferring data in a communication system. An embodiment transfers data by assigning a portion of data among groups of channels coupled to a remote node, such assigning being based on the respective flows to which the portion is associated. The portion of data across is at least two channels in the assigned group of channels, and the split portions are transferred substantially simultaneously among the channels to which they are assigned.

Claims (34)

1. A system to transfer data, the system comprising:

a first node connected to a second node via multiple channels, the first node comprising:

a first edge modulator configured to transmit over a first group of channels in the multiple channels;

a second edge modulator configured to transmit over a second group of channels in the multiple channels; and

a forwarder configured to assign a portion of the data to the first edge modulator or the second edge modulator based on a combined load of the first group of channels and a combined load of the second group of channels.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the data is a flow that defines a video or an image.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the forwarder views the first group of channels as a single channel having a bandwidth equal to the sum of the bandwidths of the first group of channels.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the forwarder is further configured to load balance flows in the data among the first edge modulator and the second edge modulator based on the combined load of the first group of channels and the combined load of the second group of channels.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the forwarder is further configured to reassign a flow in the data from the first edge modulator to the second edge modulator based on congestion at the first edge modulator.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the forwarder is further configured to wait a predetermined amount of time after a packet of the flow is transmitted to the first edge modulator before transmitting packets of the flow to the second edge modulator.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first edge modulator is configured to assign packets of a flow received from the forwarder among the first group of channels.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first edge modulator is further configured to assign the packets of the flow based on congestion associated with the first group of channels.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first node is part of a headend and the second node is a cable modem.

10. A method comprising:

determining, for a first edge modulator, a first combined load of channels associated with the first edge modulator;

determining, for a second edge modulator, a second combined load of channels associated with the second edge modulator;

assigning a flow to the first edge modulator based on the first combined load and the second combined load; and

assigning, for transmission, packets of the flow at the first edge modulator among the channels associated with the first edge modulator.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the flow defines a video or an image.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein assigning the packets of the flow at the first edge modulator among the channels associated with the first edge modulator further comprises:

assigning the packets of the flow based on congestion associated with the channels of the first edge modulator.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

reassigning the flow from the first edge modulator to the second edge modulator based on congestion at the first edge modulator.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein reassigning the flow further comprises:

waiting a predetermined amount of time after a packet of the flow is transmitted to the first edge modulator before transmitting packets of the flow to the second edge modulator.

15. An apparatus to transfer data, the apparatus comprising;

a first edge modulator configured to transmit over a first group of radio frequency (RF) channels connected to a cable modem;

a second edge modulator configured to transmit over a second group of RF channels connected to the cable modem; and

a forwarder configured to assign a portion of the data to the first edge modulator or the second edge modulator based on a combined load of the first group of RF channels and a combined load of the second group of RF channels.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the forwarder is further configured to load balance flows in the data among the first edge modulator and the second edge modulator based on the combined load of the first group of channels and the combined load of the second group of channels.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the forwarder is further configured to reassign a flow in the data from the first edge modulator to the second edge modulator based on congestion at the first edge modulator.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the forwarder is further configured to wait a predetermined amount of time after a packet of the flow is transmitted to the first edge modulator before transmitting packets of the flow to the second edge modulator.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first edge modulator is configured to assign packets of a flow received from the forwarder among the first group of channels.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the first edge modulator is further configured to assign the packets of the flow based on congestion associated with the first group of channels.
