Abstract

A chair component assembly includes a support component adapted to support a portion of a seated user and a cover having a plurality of sides that cooperate to form an interior space that receives the support component herein, wherein the cover includes a first portion comprising a thermoplastic material, and a second portion comprising a non-thermoplastic material, wherein the first portion and the second portion are attached to one another to each form an outer aesthetic surface of the cover about the support component.

Claims (42)

1. A chair component assembly, comprising:

a support component adapted to support a portion of a seated user; and

a cover having a plurality of sides that cooperate to form an interior space that receives the support component therein, the cover comprising:

a first portion comprising a substantially flexible, elastically resilient thermoplastic material; and

a second portion comprising a non-thermoplastic material, wherein the first portion and the second portion are attached to one another to each form an outer aesthetic surface of the cover about the support component.

2. The chair component assembly of claim 1 , further including at least one coupler fastening the first portion of the cover to the support component.

3. The chair component assembly of claim 2 , wherein the at least one coupler is integral with the first portion of the cover.

4. The chair component assembly of claim 3 , wherein the at least one coupler includes a Z-shaped cross-sectional configuration.

5. The chair component assembly of claim 4 , wherein the support component includes at least one aperture that receives the at least one integral coupler therein.

6. The chair component assembly of claim 5 , wherein the support component includes a substantially rigid shell member and a cushion member supported by the shell member, and wherein the shell member includes the at least one aperture.

7. The chair component assembly of claim 6 , further comprising:

a securing member attached to the support component, such that the at least one coupler is held within the at least one aperture by the securing member.

8. The chair component assembly of claim 7 , wherein at least a portion of the at least one coupler is sandwiched between the securing member and the shell member.

9. The chair component assembly of claim 7 , wherein the at least one coupler includes a plurality of couplers spaced from one another, and wherein the at least one aperture includes a plurality of apertures that receive the plurality of couplers therein.

10. The chair component assembly of claim 9 , wherein the securing member is a plate-shaped member.

11. A seating unit component assembly, comprising:

a support component adapted to support a portion of a seated user, the support component including a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, a first end surface, and a plurality of side surfaces; and

a cover having a plurality of sides that cooperate to form an interior space that receives the support component therein, the cover comprising:

a first portion comprising a non-fabric substantially flexible thermoplastic material covering at least a majority of at least one of the side surfaces of the support component, wherein the first portion forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the cover;

a second portion comprising a fabric covering at least a portion of the first surface of the support component; and

a third portion comprising a substantially rigid overlay covering at least a portion of the second surface.

12. The seating unit component assembly of claim 11 , wherein first portion and the second portion of the cover cooperate to define a corner between the first surface and at least one of the side surfaces.

13. The seating unit component assembly of claim 12 , wherein the corner comprises an angle of less than or equal to about 90°.

14. The seating unit component assembly of claim 11 , wherein at least a majority of at least one of side surfaces of the support component is covered by the third portion.

15. The seating unit component assembly of claim 11 , wherein the non-fabric substantially flexible thermoplastic material of the first portion comprises thermoplastic elastomer.

16. The seating unit component assembly of claim 11 , wherein the support component comprises a seat assembly, and wherein the first surface comprises an upwardly disposed top surface.

17. The seating unit component assembly of claim 11 , wherein the third portion of the cover is significantly offset from the first end surface of the support component.

18. The seating unit component assembly of claim 17 , wherein the support component further includes a second end surface opposite the first end surface that cooperates with the first end surface to define a total length of the support component, and wherein the third portion is offset from the first end surface by at least one quarter of a total length of the support component.

19. The seating unit component assembly of claim 18 , wherein the support component comprises a seat assembly.

20. A seating unit component assembly, comprising:

a support component adapted to support a portion of a seated user, the support component including a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, a first end surface, and a plurality of side surfaces; and

a cover having a plurality of sides that cooperate to form an interior space that receives the support component therein, the cover comprising:

a first portion comprising a flexible, elastically resilient material covering at least a majority of at least one of the side surfaces of the support component, wherein the first portion forms at least a portion of an outer surface of the cover;

a second portion comprising a flexible material having a flexibility that is greater than the flexibility of the first portion and covering at least a portion of the first surface of the support component; and

a third portion comprising a substantially rigid overlay, wherein the third portion is less flexible than the first portion.

21. The seating unit component assembly of claim 20 , wherein the first portion of the cover comprises a non-fabric substantially flexible thermoplastic material.

22. The seating unit component assembly of claim 21 , wherein the non-fabric substantially flexible thermoplastic material of the first portion comprises thermoplastic elastomer.

23. The seating unit component assembly of claim 21 , wherein the second portion of the cover comprises a fabric.

24. The seating unit component assembly of claim 23 , wherein the third portion of the cover comprises a plastic.

25. The seating unit component assembly of claim 20 , wherein first portion and the second portion of the cover cooperate to define a corner between the first surface and at least one of the side surfaces.

26. The seating unit component assembly of claim 25 , wherein the corner comprises an angle of less than or equal to about 90°.

27. The seating unit component assembly of claim 20 , wherein at least a majority of at least one of side surfaces of the support component is covered by the third portion.
