Abstract

Certain example embodiments relate to a coated article including at least one infrared (IR) reflecting layer of a material such as silver or the like in a low-E coating, and methods of making the same. In certain cases, at least one layer of the coating is of or includes nickel and/or titanium (e.g., Ni x Ti y O z ). The provision of a layer including nickel titanium and/or an oxide thereof may permit a layer to be used that has good adhesion to the IR reflecting layer, and reduced absorption of visible light (resulting in a coated article with a higher visible transmission). When a layer including nickel titanium oxide is provided directly over and/or under the IR reflecting layer (e.g., as a barrier layer), this may result in improved chemical and mechanical durability. Thus, visible transmission may be improved if desired, without compromising durability; or, durability may simply be increased.

Claims (35)

1. A heat treated coated article including a low-E coating, comprising:

a glass substrate, and the low-E coating of the heat treated coated article including the following layers moving from the glass substrate outwardly:

at least one first dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride;

a first layer comprising Ni and Ti on and contacting the first dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride;

an IR reflecting layer comprising Ag on and contacting the first layer comprising Ni and Ti;

a second layer that is metallic and comprising Ni and Ti on and contacting the IR reflecting layer comprising Ag, wherein each of the first and second layers comprising Ni and Ti comprise with respect to metal content from about 5 to 20% Ni and from about 80-95% Ti;

another dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride on the glass substrate over at least the second layer comprising Ni and Ti;

wherein the coating has a sheet resistance of less than or equal to about 1.2 ohms/sq.;

wherein the coated article has a visible transmission of at least about 65%; and

wherein the low-E coating contains only one IR reflecting layer comprising silver.

2. The coated article of claim 1 , wherein the another dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride is an overcoat and is the outmost layer of a coating including the recited layers.

3. The coated article of claim 1 , further comprising another dielectric layer between the glass substrate and the first dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride.

4. A heat treated coated article including a low-E coating, comprising:

a glass substrate, and the low-E coating of the heat treated coated article including the following layers moving from the glass substrate outwardly:

a first dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride;

a first contact layer on and contacting the first dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride;

an IR reflecting layer comprising Ag on and contacting the first contact layer;

a second contact layer that is metallic and comprises Ni and Ti that is on and contacting the IR reflecting layer comprising Ag, wherein the second contact layer comprises with respect to metal content from about 5 to 20% Ni and from about 80-95% Ti;

another dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride on the glass substrate over at least the second contact layer comprising Ni and Ti;

wherein the coating has a sheet resistance of less than or equal to about 1.2 ohms/sq.;

wherein the coated article has a visible transmission of at least about 65%; and

wherein the low-E coating contains only one IR reflecting layer comprising silver.

5. The coated article of claim 4 , wherein the another dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride is an overcoat and is the outmost layer of a coating including the recited layers.

6. The coated article of claim 4 , further comprising another dielectric layer between the glass substrate and the first dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride.

7. The coated article of claim 4 , wherein the first contact layer comprises zinc oxide.

8. A heat treated coated article comprising:

a glass substrate, and a low-E coating of the heat treated coated article including at least the following layers moving from the glass substrate outwardly:

a first dielectric layer;

a first contact layer on and contacting the first dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride;

an IR reflecting layer comprising Ag on and contacting the first contact layer;

a second contact layer that is metallic and consists essentially of Ni and Ti that is on and contacting the IR reflecting layer comprising Ag, wherein the second contact layer comprises with respect to metal content from about 5 to 20% Ni and from about 80-95% Ti;

another dielectric layer comprising silicon nitride on the glass substrate over at least the second contact layer comprising Ni and Ti;

wherein the coating has a sheet resistance of less than or equal to about 1.2 ohms/sq.;

wherein the coated article has a visible transmission of at least about 65%; and

wherein the low-E coating contains only one IR reflecting layer comprising silver.
