Abstract

Embodiments described herein relate to a methods and apparatus for optimizing and calibrating a magnetic field generator. In various embodiments, the magnetic field generator includes a signal generator for outputting a voltage and a magnetic field generating circuit including a shunt that may be used to change a value of inductance in the magnetic field generating circuit.

Claims (32)

1. A magnetic field generator, comprising:

a signal generator for outputting a voltage,

a magnetic field generating circuit for generating a magnetic field, wherein the magnetic field generating circuit comprises:

a capacitor, and

an inductor, and

a shunt movably supported relative to the inductor, wherein moving the shunt changes a value of inductance in the magnetic field generating circuit.

2. The magnetic field marker generator of claim 1 , wherein the shunt is cylindrical.

3. The magnetic marker field generator of claim 1 , wherein the shunt is manually adjustable.

4. The magnetic marker field generator of claim 1 , wherein the shunt is automatically adjustable.

5. The magnetic field generator of claim 1 , wherein the shunt comprises aluminum.

6. The magnetic field generator of claim 1 , wherein the shunt is positioned relative to the inductor such that a resonance of the magnetic field generating circuit is at a maximum value for a given voltage.

7. The magnetic field generator of claim 6 , wherein the maximum value of the resonance of the magnetic field occurs when the current a current across the inductor is at a maximum value for a given voltage.

8. The magnetic field generator of claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to detect at least one property of the magnetic field generating circuit.

9. The magnetic field generator of claim 8 , wherein the property is voltage or current.

10. The magnetic field generator of claim 8 , further comprising a voltage divider circuit in electrical parallel with the inductor.

11. The magnetic field generator of claim 8 , further comprising an adjustable member for moving the shunt.

12. The magnetic field generator of claim 11 , wherein the controller is configured to manipulate the adjustable member so as to position the shunt relative to the inductor such that a resonance of the magnetic field generating circuit changes.

13. The magnetic field generator of claim 1 , wherein the inductor and the capacitor are electrically connected in series.

14. The magnetic field generator of claim 1 , wherein the shunt is positioned relative to the inductor such that the current across the inductor is at a maximum value for a given voltage.

15. A proximity detection system comprising:

a first magnetic field generator for generating a first magnetic field associated with a first hazardous location,

a second magnetic field generator for generating a second magnetic field associated with a second hazardous location, wherein the first and second hazardous locations are different,

a first magnetic field detector associated with the first hazardous location configured to detect the second magnetic field and provide a warning upon detecting the second magnetic field, and

a second magnetic field detector configured to detect the first magnetic field and provide a warning upon detecting the first magnetic field.

16. The proximity detection system of claim 15 , wherein the first and second magnetic fields define a first and a second warning zone, respectively associated with the first and second hazardous locations, the first and second warning zones not being concentric with each other.

17. The proximity detection system of claim 16 , wherein the first hazardous location is a dangerous area.

18. The proximity detection system of claim 16 , wherein the first hazardous location is a dangerous moving object.

19. The proximity detection system of claim 18 , wherein the second hazardous location a stationary dangerous area.

20. The proximity detection system of claim 16 , wherein the second hazardous location is a dangerous area.

21. The proximity detection system of claim 16 , wherein the second hazardous location is a dangerous moving object.

22. The proximity detection system of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the first and second magnetic field detectors comprises a three axis antenna.

23. The proximity detection system of claim 15 , wherein the second magnetic field detector is associated with the second hazardous location.
