Abstract

Embodiments are directed towards managing and tracking item identification of a plurality of items to determine if an item is a new or existing item, where an existing item has been previously processed. In some embodiments, two or more item identifiers may be generated. In one embodiment, generating the two or more item identifiers may include analyzing the item using a small item size characteristic, a compressed item, or for an identifier collision. The two or more item identifiers may be employed to determine if the item is a new or existing item. In one embodiment, the two or more item identifiers may be compared to a record about an existing item to determine if the item is a new or existing item. If the item is an existing item, then the item may be further processed to determine if the existing item has actually changed.

Claims (78)

1. A method, comprising:

calculating a digital signature on at least a portion of a stored file;

determining whether the stored file has been previously reviewed using the digital signature; and

in response to a determination that the stored file has been previously reviewed:

determining whether the stored file has increased in size beyond a last accessed position in the stored file; and

in response to determining that the stored file has increased in size:

analyzing data in the stored file from the last accessed position to an end of the stored file; and

updating the last accessed position to the end of the stored file.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

calculating a digital signature of a name of the file;

comparing the digital signature of the name of the file to a known digital signature of the name of the file;

in response to the digital signature of the name of the file not matching the known digital signature of the name of the file, returning an error to a calling process.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

maintaining a file handle to the file until the file has been completely processed.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files, creating a new file record and adding the calculated digital signature to the plurality of known digital signatures of files.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files:

creating a new file record and adding the calculated digital signature to the new file record;

processing data in the file to an end of the file; and

saving, in the record, the end of the file as a last accessed position.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files:

creating a new file record and adding the calculated digital signature to the new file record;

calculating a digital signature of a name of the file; and

saving, in the record, the digital signature of the name of the file.

7. An apparatus, comprising:

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that calculates a digital signature on at least a portion of a stored file;

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that determines whether the stored file has been previously reviewed using the digital signature; and

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that in response to a determination that the stored file has been previously reviewed:

determines whether the stored file has increased in size beyond a last accessed position in the stored file; and

in response to a determination that the stored file has increased in size:

analyzes data in the stored file from the last accessed position to an end of the file; and

updates the last accessed position to the end of the stored file.

8. The apparatus as recited in claim 7 , further comprising:

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that calculates a digital signature of a name of the file;

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that compares the digital signature of the name of the file to a known digital signature of the name of the file;

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that in response to the digital signature of the name of the file not matching the known digital signature of the name of the file, returns an error indication.

9. The apparatus as recited in claim 7 , further comprising:

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that maintains a file handle to the file until the file has been completely processed.

10. The apparatus as recited in claim 7 , further comprising:

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files, creates a new file record and adds the calculated digital signature to the plurality of known digital signatures of files.

11. The apparatus as recited in claim 7 , further comprising:

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files:

creates a new file record and adding the calculated digital signature to the new file record;

processes data in the file to an end of the file; and

saves, in the record, the end of the file as a last accessed position.

12. The apparatus as recited in claim 7 , further comprising:

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files:

creates a new file record and adding the calculated digital signature to the new file record;

calculates a digital signature of a name of the file; and

saves, in the record, the digital signature of the name of the file.

13. A non-transitory computer readable medium, storing software instructions, which when executed by one or more processors cause performance of:

calculating a digital signature on at least a portion of a stored file;

determining whether the stored file has been previously reviewed using the digital signature; and

in response to a determination that the stored file has been previously reviewed:

determining whether the stored file has increased in size beyond a last accessed position in the stored file; and

in response to determining that the stored file has increased in size:

analyzing data in the stored file from the last accessed position to an end of the stored file; and

updating the last accessed position to the end of the stored file.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 13 , further comprising:

calculating a digital signature of a name of the file;

comparing the digital signature of the name of the file to a known digital signature of the name of the file;

in response to the digital signature of the name of the file not matching the known digital signature of the name of the file, returning an error to a calling process.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 13 , further comprising:

maintaining a file handle to the file until the file has been completely processed.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 13 , further comprising:

in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files, creating a new file record and adding the calculated digital signature to the plurality of known digital signatures of files.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 13 , further comprising:

in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files:

creating a new file record and adding the calculated digital signature to the new file record;

processing data in the file to an end of the file; and

saving, in the record, the end of the file as a last accessed position.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in claim 13 , further comprising:

in response to the calculated digital signature not being equal to a known digital signature of a file among the plurality of known digital signatures of files:

creating a new file record and adding the calculated digital signature to the new file record;

calculating a digital signature of a name of the file; and

saving, in the record, the digital signature of the name of the file.
