Abstract

An approach provides a satellite air interface to efficiently support communication with a terrestrial network. One or more packets associated with a data communication session are received from a terrestrial network configured to provide cellular communications. A frame representing the packet for transmission is generated over a satellite link to a user terminal. Signaling information for the transmission of the packet over the terrestrial network is modified or eliminated for transmission over the satellite link.

Claims (25)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a plurality of data packets for transmission to a destination node of a communications network, wherein at least a subset of the data packets are associated with a first data session of the communications network, and wherein each data packet comprises header information appended to a data payload, wherein the header information of each data packet includes one or more of real-time transfer protocol (RTP), user datagram protocol (UDP) and Internet protocol (IP) header information; and

generating a data frames representing the data packets associated with the first data session for transmission over a channel of a satellite link of the communications network; and

wherein the generation of the data frames representing the data packets associated with the first data session comprises stripping the header information from the respective data payload of each data packet and inserting at least one data payload in each data frame, and appending a first pattern of reference symbols to at least one of the data frames, wherein the first reference symbol pattern reflects a first vocoder rate corresponding to voice data of the data payload(s) inserted in the respective data frame.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the first data session is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) session, and the associated data packets comprise voice data packets of the VoIP session.

3. An apparatus comprising:

an interface configured to receive a plurality of data packets for transmission to a destination node of a communications network, wherein at least a subset of the data packets are associated with a first data session of the communications network, and wherein each data packet comprises header information appended to a data payload, wherein the header information of each data packet includes one or more of real-time transfer protocol (RTP), user datagram protocol (UDP) and Internet protocol (IP) header information; and

a processor configured to generate data frames representing the data packets associated with the first data session for transmission over a channel of a satellite link of the communications network; and

wherein, for the generation of the data frames representing the data packets associated with the first data session, the processor is configured to strip the header information from the respective data payload of each data packet and insert at least one data payload in each data frame, and to append a first pattern of reference symbols to at least one of the data frames, wherein the first reference symbol pattern reflects a first vocoder rate corresponding to voice data of the data payload(s) inserted in the respective data frame.

4. An apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the first data session is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) session, and the data packets would comprise voice data packets of the VoIP session.

5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the generation of the data frames representing the data packets associated with the first data session further comprises appending a second pattern of reference symbols to at least one of the data frames, wherein the second pattern of reference symbols indicates that the data payload(s) inserted in the respective data frame do not contain voice data.

6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein a further subset of the data packets are associated with a second data session of the communications network, the method further comprising:

generating data frames representing the data packets associated with the second data session for transmission over the satellite channel, wherein the generation of the data frames representing the data packets associated with the second data session comprises stripping the header information from the respective data payload of each data packet and inserting at least one data payload in each data frame, and appending a second pattern of reference symbols to at least one of the data frames, wherein the second pattern of reference symbols indicates that the data payload(s) inserted in the respective data frame do not contain voice data.

7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the data frames are physical layer transmission frames, and each pattern of reference symbols is appended as at least a portion of a physical layer header of the respective data frame to which the reference symbol pattern is appended.

8. A method according to claim 7 , wherein each pattern of reference symbols forms a unique word (UW) pattern of the respective physical layer header for physical layer frame synchronization.

9. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the first pattern of reference symbols is one of a plurality of different reference symbol patterns, each corresponding to a respective vocoder rate, and wherein the generation of the data frames representing the data packets associated with the first data session further comprises appending a second pattern of reference symbols of the plurality of different reference symbol patterns to at least one of the data frames, wherein the second pattern of reference symbols reflects a second vocoder rate corresponding to voice data of the data payload(s) inserted in the respective data frame.

10. A method according to claim 9 , wherein the data frames are physical layer transmission frames, and each pattern of reference symbols is appended as at least a portion of a physical layer header of the respective data frame to which the reference symbol pattern is appended.

11. A method according to claim 10 , wherein each pattern of reference symbols forms a unique word (UW) pattern of the respective physical layer header for physical layer frame synchronization.

12. An apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein, for the generation of the data frames representing the data packets associated with the first data session, the processor is further configured to append a second pattern of reference symbols to at least one of the data frames, wherein the second pattern of reference symbols indicates that the data payload(s) inserted in the respective data frame do not contain voice data.

13. An apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein a further subset of the data packets are associated with a second data session of the communications network, and wherein the processor is further configured to generate data frames representing the data packets associated with the second data session for transmission over the satellite channel, wherein, for the generation of the data frames representing the data packets associated with the second data session, the processor is configured to strip the header information from the respective data payload of each data packet and insert at least one data payload in each data frame, and to append a second pattern of reference symbols to at least one of the data frames, wherein the second pattern of reference symbols indicates that the data payload(s) inserted in the respective data frame do not contain voice data.

14. An apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the data frames are physical layer transmission frames, and each pattern of reference symbols is appended as at least a portion of a physical layer header of the respective data frame to which the reference symbol pattern is appended.

15. An apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein each pattern of reference symbols forms a unique word (UW) pattern of the respective physical layer header for physical layer frame synchronization.

16. An apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the first pattern of reference symbols is one of a plurality of different reference symbol patterns, each corresponding to a respective vocoder rate, and wherein, for the generation of the data frames representing the data packets associated with the first data session, the processor is further configured to append a second pattern of reference symbols of the plurality of different reference symbol patterns to at least one of the data frames, wherein the second pattern of reference symbols reflects a second vocoder rate corresponding to voice data of the data payload(s) inserted in the respective data frame.

17. An apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the data frames are physical layer transmission frames, and each pattern of reference symbols is appended as at least a portion of a physical layer header of the respective data frame to which the reference symbol pattern is appended.

18. An apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein each pattern of reference symbols forms a unique word (UW) pattern of the respective physical layer header for physical layer frame synchronization.
