Abstract

A device receives a request from a controlling device, such as a remote control, smart phone, or the like, where the request is intended to have one or more target devices perform one or more functional operations. The device responds to the request by applying the optimum methodology to propagate one or more commands to each intended target appliance to cause each intended target appliance to perform the intended one or more functional operations.

Claims (8)

1. A method for controlling a functional operation of an intended target appliance, comprising:

receiving by a Universal Control Engine a request from a controlling device, the request having data that specifies the functional operation of the intended target appliance that is to be controlled by the Universal Control Engine;

causing the Universal Control Engine to respond to the request by transmitting both a first command for controlling the functional operation of the intended target appliance and a second command for controlling the functional operation of the intended target appliance;

wherein the first command is transmitted to the intended target appliance using a first command transmission medium and a corresponding command value and control protocol retrieved from command data stored in a memory of the Universal Control Engine and the second command is transmitted to the intended target appliance using a second command transmission medium different than the first transmission medium and a corresponding command value and control protocol retrieved from command data stored in the memory of the Universal Control Engine and wherein the Universal Control Engine uses the functional operation of the intended target device that is specified in the request to select the first command transmission medium and the second command transmission medium.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first command transmission medium comprises a wired transmission medium and the second command transmission medium comprises a wireless transmission medium.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first command transmission medium comprises a first wired transmission medium and the second command transmission medium comprises a second wired transmission medium different than the first wired transmission medium.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first command transmission medium comprises a first wireless transmission medium and the second command transmission medium comprises a second wireless transmission medium different than the first wireless transmission medium.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the Universal Control Engine uses the functional operation that is specified in the request to further determine an order in which to transmit the first command and the second command.
