Abstract

A system and method for creating content such as artificial reality (AR) messages at an event, particularly among members on a social network, thereby enhancing and expanding the event experience. Typically, a participant shares an event with spectators, such as friends or a subset of friends in the participant's social network. The AR message may include geo-referenced artificial reality words, products or symbols and appear in a perspective view of the event to the participant or spectators. In addition to creating an active gallery for an event, messages, audio and video can be exchanged among participants and spectators, and virtual goods, money, bets, applause, other feedback, and donations exchanged.

Claims (40)

1. A method of observing an event comprising:

electing to participate in the event having a physical location and time, where data associated with the event is stored on a social network;

creating a view of the event comprising an augmented reality (AR) message overlaid a background, wherein the background comprises an image created by a participant using an accompanying device and said AR message is applied to the background image;

storing said view of the event including said AR message on said social network, where access to said view and AR message is limited in distribution to members of said social network;

one or more members of said social network electing to participate as a spectator for access to said view and AR message;

selectively publishing said view and AR message to said spectator;

observing said view of the event by said spectator in a perspective view with the AR message immediately discernable overlaid said background image.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said storing and said observing steps occur during said time of said event.

3. The method of claim 1 , said creating step includes wherein said AR message is georeferenced.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content of the AR message is related to the conduct of the event.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content of the AR message is related to context.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content of the AR message is related to an event participant.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein observing the event includes said spectator wearing glasses to view said event with said AR message discernible on said glasses.

8. A system for observing an event having a time and venue with members of a social network, comprising:

a server associated with said social network;

a participant device accompanying an event participant during the time of the event to track positions of said participant in real time during the event at the event venue, and to create an augmented reality (AR) message overlaid a background proximate the participant position at the event venue wherein the background comprises an image created by the participant using the accompanying device and said AR message is applied to the background image;

a communication link between said participant device in the event and said social network server to transmit participant positions and said participant AR message to said server;

a spectator device operably connected to said social network server for downloading information from said social network server, including said participant (AR) message;

a communication link between said spectator device and said social network server to communicate said (AR) message from said social network server; and

wherein said server and spectator device being operable to permit said spectator to observe said event in a perspective view including said participant AR message overlaid a background.

9. The system of claim 8 , the participant device including a GPS receiver for determining positions at the venue for the event.

10. The system of claim 8 , at least one of said communication links comprising a cellular network.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein said server allows the spectator device to communicate with said participant device in real time during the event time.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein said spectator communication link and server permits the spectator to award compensation to said participant.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the background to said perspective view is a photo image.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the background to said perspective view is a video background.

15. The system of claim 8 , wherein said participant device includes glasses worn on the head of the participant.

16. The system of claim 8 , wherein said participant device is a mobile device accompanying one or more participants to view said event.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein said participant device comprises a smart phone tethered to said glasses.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least some of said view is created by a participant on a device and said view is posted to said social network only if said participant is in attendance at said event.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein said background image is created by a participant device and posted to the social network for viewing and said AR message is applied to the background image by the social network.

20. A method of participating in an event, comprising:

electing to participate in the event as a participant by registering on a social network, wherein the event has a physical location and time;

operating a device accompanying the participant to determine location, and permitting the participant to acquire and share views of the event;

creating a perspective view of the event comprising an augmented reality (AR) message on a background image of the event, wherein the background image is created by the participant using the accompanying device and said AR message is applied to the background image

storing said perspective view to said social network; and

distributing said perspective view from said social network to one or more spectators who have elected to join the event on said social network.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the background image is a video of the event acquired by a camera on the participant device.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the participant device includes glasses worn on the head of the participant.

23. The method of claim 20 , wherein said participant is only allowed to share views of the event if the device location is proximate the event location.
