Abstract

A roof-bolt drill bit has a bit body that is rotatable about a central axis, a coupling pocket defined in the bit body, and at least one cutting element mounted to the bit body, the at least one cutting element having a non-cylindrical periphery. The at least one cutting element includes a cutting face, a cutting edge adjacent the cutting face, a back surface opposite the cutting face, and a side surface extending between the cutting edge and the back surface, at least a portion of the side surface of the at least one cutting element being bonded to a side surface of the coupling pocket. The roof-bolt drill bit includes a coupling projection extending from the at least one cutting element, the coupling projection being bonded to a coupling recess defined in the bit body.

Claims (54)

1. A roof-bolt drill bit, comprising:

a bit body rotatable about a central axis;

a coupling pocket defined in the bit body, the coupling pocket including a back mounting surface and a side surface;

at least one cutting element mounted to the bit body, the at least one cutting element having a non-cylindrical periphery and comprising:

a cutting face;

a cutting edge adjacent the cutting face;

a back surface opposite the cutting face;

a side surface extending between the cutting edge and the back surface, at least a portion of the side surface of the at least one cutting element being bonded to the side surface of the coupling pocket;

at least one coupling recess defined in the bit body positioned adjacent the at least one cutting element;

a coupling projection extending from the at least one cutting element;

wherein the coupling projection is bonded to the coupling recess by brazing.

2. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the coupling projection extends from the back surface of the at least one cutting element.

3. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the coupling projection extends from the side surface of the at least one cutting element.

4. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the coupling projection comprises a portion of a coupling attachment extending through an opening defined in the cutting element.

5. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising another coupling projection extending from the bit body;

wherein:

the at least one cutting element further comprises another coupling recess defined in the at least one cutting element;

the other coupling projection is positioned within the other coupling recess.

6. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 5 , wherein the other coupling projection comprises a portion of a coupling attachment extending through an opening defined in the bit body.

7. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 5 , further comprising a coupling insert positioned within the other coupling recess, wherein the other coupling projection is at least partially surrounded by the coupling insert.

8. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , wherein:

at least a portion of the coupling pocket includes another coupling projection extending away from the side surface;

the at least one cutting element comprises another coupling recess corresponding to the other coupling projection.

9. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising a locking member attached to the bit body;

wherein the locking member is positioned adjacent the at least one cutting element such that the cutting element is secured to the bit body.

10. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 9 , wherein:

the locking member is movable between an unlocked position and a locked position;

the locking member is positioned adjacent the at least one cutting element in the locked position.

11. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of the locking member is positioned adjacent at least one of the cutting face and the side surface of the at least one cutting element.

12. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 9 , wherein:

the cutting element comprises another coupling recess;

at least a portion of the locking member is positioned within the other coupling recess.

13. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cutting element comprises two cutting elements positioned circumferentially substantially 180° apart with substantially the same back rake and side rake angles.

14. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising a coupling attachment secured to the bit body, wherein at least a portion of the cutting element is positioned between the coupling attachment and the bit body.

15. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 14 , wherein the coupling attachment comprises at least one engagement feature positioned adjacent the at least one cutting element.

16. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cutting element further comprises a superabrasive material bonded to a substrate.

17. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 16 , wherein the superabrasive material comprises a polycrystalline diamond material.

18. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the coupling projection has a smaller diameter than the cutting element.

19. A roof-bolt drill bit, comprising:

a bit body rotatable about a central axis;

a coupling pocket defined in the bit body, the coupling pocket including a back mounting surface and a side surface;

at least one cutting element mounted to the bit body, the at least one cutting element having a non-cylindrical periphery and comprising:

a superabrasive table comprising:

a cutting face;

a cutting edge adjacent the cutting face;

a substrate bonded to the superabrasive table, the substrate comprising a back surface opposite the cutting face;

a side surface extending between the cutting edge and the back surface, at least a portion of the side surface of the at least one cutting element being bonded to the side surface of the coupling pocket;

a coupling projection extending from the back surface of the substrate;

wherein the coupling projection is secured to the bit body.

20. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 19 , further comprising at least one coupling recess defined in the bit body positioned adjacent the at least one cutting element;

wherein the coupling projection is bonded to the coupling recess.

21. The roof-bolt drill bit of claim 19 , further comprising a coupling attachment secured to the bit body,
