Abstract

A controller for implementing a method, device and/or system for generating arbitrary waveforms of a desired shape that can be used for generating a stimulation pulse for medical purposes such as for spinal cord stimulation therapy, where such arbitrary waveforms can also be used for charge balancing purposes.

a waveform generation circuit for generating an output waveform comprised of a plurality of phases each one being configurable in any one of a plurality of different waveform shapes for providing to the stimulation region of the patient;

a plurality of sets of phase registers, wherein each set of the phase registers includes a respective waveform shape register, and wherein the respective waveform shape register defines the waveform shape for a respective phase of the output waveform; and

a control device for controlling said waveform generation circuit, wherein said control device comprises a state machine having an interface for receiving at least the plurality of sets of the phase registers as control inputs, said state machine being configured for directing said waveform generation circuit for generating the output waveform in a reproducible and repeatable manner, wherein

said state machine directs said waveform generation circuit to generate the plurality of phases of the output waveform based on how the waveform shapes for the plurality of phases of the output waveform are defined by the respective waveform shape registers.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein each set of the phase registers each includes at least one respective amplitude register for storing an amplitude and a polarity for one phase portion of the output waveform.

3. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein each set of the phase registers each includes at least one respective delay register for storing a delay value providing a delay time between said one phase portion and a following phase portion of the output waveform.

4. The medical device of claim 3 , said state machine further comprising a first register for storing information about a first phase portion of a pulse train comprising the output waveform and a second register for storing information about a last phase portion of the pulse train comprising the output waveform.

5. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein each set of the phase registers includes a plurality of amplitude registers that each store a different amplitude and polarity set for generating a corresponding phase portion of the output waveform, and further wherein each set of the phase registers includes at least one delay register for storing a delay value for providing a delay time between one phase portion and a following phase portion of the output waveform.

6. The medical device of claim 5 , said state machine further comprising a first register for storing information about a first phase portion of a pulse train comprising the output waveform and a second register for storing information about a last phase portion of the pulse train comprising the output waveform.

7. The medical device of any of claim 5 , said state machine further comprising a repetitions register for storing a value representing a number of times that one or more of said phase portions should be repeated in series for the output waveform.

8. The medical device of any of claim 5 , said state machine further comprising a pause register for storing a value indicating that the state machine should pause after executing a particular one of a plurality of phase portions.

9. The medical device of claim 5 , said state machine further comprising a sync register for storing a value indicating whether a particular one of said phase portions should provide a synchronization signal.

10. The medical device of claim 1 , said state machine further comprising a repetitions register for storing a value representing a number of times that one or more of said phases should be repeated in series for the output waveform.

11. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein said control device further comprises a controller for controlling an operation of said state machine.

12. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein each of the waveform shape registers is configured to define a sinusoidal waveform.

13. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein each of the waveform shape registers is configured to define an exponential waveform.

14. A method of controlling a medical device, comprising steps of:

a controller issuing a first load command to load a plurality of sets phase registers, wherein each set of the registers comprises a respective waveform shape definition register;

loading the waveform shape definition register of each set of the phase registers in a state machine with a respective waveform definition value, wherein each respective waveform definition value defines a waveform shape for a respective phase of an output waveform to be generated by a waveform generator; and

the controller issuing a run command instructing a state machine to control the waveform generator to generate an output waveform based on the waveform definition values stored in the waveform shape definition registers.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein each set of the phase registers each further comprise a delay definition register, and wherein the method further comprises a step of: loading each of the delay definition registers with a respective delay value that defines a length of a delay period after each phase of the output waveform.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein each set of the phase registers each further comprise a plurality of amplitude definition registers, and wherein the method further comprises a step of: loading each of the amplitude definition registers with a respective amplitude value that defines an amplitude for a respective one of a plurality of channels for outputting the waveform.

17. A medical device for stimulating a stimulation region of a patient comprising:

a waveform generation circuit for generating an output waveform comprised of a plurality of waveform phases for each of a plurality of different channels for providing to the stimulation region of the patient, wherein said waveform generation circuit is configured to generate the waveform phases having any one of a plurality of different waveform shapes;

a plurality of phase register sets, wherein each one of said phase register sets comprises:

a waveform shape definition register that stores a value configured for selecting a particular waveform shape from among the plurality of different waveform shapes provided by the waveform generation circuit, and
