Abstract

An external defibrillator may have a controller to set the defibrillator in a synchronous shock operating mode or an asynchronous shock operating mode, a shock module to cause the defibrillator to deliver shock therapy to a patient according to the present operating mode of the defibrillator, and a heart rhythm detector to detect a heart rhythm of the patient. The defibrillator may also have a mode assessment module to determine whether the present operating mode or selected defibrillation energy of the defibrillator is appropriate based on the detected heart rhythm of the patient.

Claims (44)

1. An external defibrillator having a synchronous shock operating mode and an asynchronous shock operating mode, the defibrillator comprising:

a manual mode controller configured to set the defibrillator in the synchronous shock operating mode or the asynchronous shock operating mode;

an automatic mode controller configured to set the defibrillator in the synchronous shock operating mode or the asynchronous shock operating mode;

a shock module configured to cause the defibrillator to deliver shock therapy to the patient according to the present operating mode of the defibrillator;

a heart rhythm detector configured to detect a heart rhythm of the patient; and

an energy adjustment recommendation module configured to determine whether an energy level of the shock should be adjusted based on the detected heart rhythm of the patient.

2. The defibrillator of claim 1 , further comprising:

a prompt module configured to deliver a prompt to a user responsive to the energy adjustment recommendation module determining that the energy level of the shock should be adjusted.

3. The defibrillator of claim 2 , wherein

the prompt includes at least one of: a voice prompt configured to audibly deliver a message to the user, a visual prompt configured to visually deliver a message to the user, or a tactile prompt configured to tactually deliver a message to the user.

4. The defibrillator of claim 1 , further comprising:

a prompt module configured to deliver a prompt to a user responsive to the energy adjustment recommendation module determining that the energy level of the shock should be increased.

5. The defibrillator of 4 , wherein

the prompt includes at least one of: a voice prompt configured to audibly deliver a message to the user, a visual prompt configured to visually deliver a message to the user, or a tactile prompt configured to tactually deliver a message to the user.

6. The defibrillator of claim 1 , wherein

the automatic mode controller is further configured to automatically cause the energy level of the shock to be adjusted responsive to the energy adjustment recommendation module determining that the energy level of the shock should be adjusted.

7. The defibrillator of claim 6 , further comprising:

a prompt module configured to deliver a prompt to a user, the prompt indicating that the energy level of the shock has been adjusted.

8. The defibrillator of claim 1 , wherein

the automatic mode controller is further configured to automatically cause the energy level of the shock to be adjusted responsive to the energy adjustment recommendation module determining that the energy level of the shock should be increased.

9. The defibrillator of claim 8 , further comprising:

a prompt module configured to deliver a prompt to a user, the prompt indicating that the energy level of the shock has been increased.

10. The defibrillator of claim 1 , further comprising:

a mode indicator configured to provide a signal indicating the present operating mode of the defibrillator.

11. The defibrillator of claim 10 , wherein

the signal includes at least one of: an audible signal, a visible, or a tactile signal.

12. The defibrillator of claim 1 , further comprising:

a processor configured to implement the manual mode controller and the automatic mode controller.

13. A method of operating an external defibrillator having a synchronous shock operating mode and an asynchronous shock operating mode, comprising:

detecting whether the present operating mode of the defibrillator is the synchronous shock operating mode or the asynchronous shock operating mode;

detecting a heart rhythm of the patient; and

determining whether an energy level of a shock to be delivered to a patient should be adjusted based on the detected heart rhythm of the patient.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

delivering a prompt to a user responsive to a determination that the energy level of the shock should be adjusted, the prompt instructing the user to cause the energy level of the shock to be adjusted.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

automatically adjusting the energy level of the shock responsive to a determination that the energy level of the shock should be adjusted.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

delivering a prompt to a user, the prompt indicating that the energy level of the shock has been adjusted.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

delivering a prompt to a user responsive to a determination that the energy level of the shock should be increased, the prompt instructing the user to cause the energy level of the shock to be increased.

18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

automatically increasing the energy level of the shock responsive to a determination that the energy level of the shock should be increased.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

delivering a prompt to a user, the prompt indicating that the energy level of the shock has been increased.
