Abstract

A compression ring to grip and compress body structure such as diverticulum, hemorrhoids, and tissue adjacent a hole. A resilient ring-shaped body defines a compression channel, and one or more axially rigid elongated spikes extend from the body into the channel. The body defines a first axial segment surrounding the compression channel and a second axial segment surrounding the compression channel, with the spike being engaged only with the second axial segment. The first axial segment more tightly compresses the body structure than the second axial segment.

Claims (6)

1. A device, comprising:

A torus-shaped resilient ring defining a central ring axis and a circular transverse axis, the ring also defining a compression channel coaxial with the central ring axis, the compression channel defining a diameter, the ring having at least one gripping element that is configured for engaging tissue in a human body, the gripping element being straight from an interface of the gripping element with the ring to a free end of the gripping element and defining a straight element axis from the interface to the free end, the straight element axis being perpendicular to the central ring axis when the ring is in a relaxed state, the ring being configured for placement on a distal end of a delivery device, the ring being materially biased to the relaxed state, in which the ring assumes a radially smaller configuration, the ring being stretchable to an enlarged state to fit onto the delivery device with the gripping element bearing against the delivery device to urge the straight element axis away from being perpendicular to the central ring axis and thereby twist the ring about the circular transverse axis, the ring configured for assuming the enlarged state when on the delivery device and for assuming the relaxed state when urged off the delivery device and onto the tissue, the ring being configured for being rolled about its circumference onto the delivery device such that upon release of the ring the ring unrolls under the influence of material bias to drive the gripping element into the tissue, wherein in the relaxed state the compression channel has a first diameter and the gripping element is oriented perpendicularly to the central ring axis, wherein the ring is expandable to the enlarged state for loading onto the delivery device, the compression channel having a second diameter larger than the first diameter in the enlarged state such that the ring closely surrounds the delivery device, the gripping element extending in a proximal or distal orientation relative to the circular transverse axis such that the ring when loaded onto the delivery device is circumferentially twisted, the ring twisting circumferentially into the relaxed state when urged from the delivery device such that the gripping element penetrates tissue owing to hoop strength of the ring.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ring comprises plural gripping elements.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein each gripping element defines an end disposed substantially in the center of the ring when the ring is relaxed.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the gripping element is established by a spike.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second diameter is equal to a diameter of a tube on the delivery device, the first diameter being smaller than the diameter of the tube.
